Change Ups: Heys selected for diverse communities scholarship

… The Michigan Economic Development Corp. has awarded a $2.9 million grant to Grand Rapids Community College to purchase equipment for its machine tool, welding, HVAC and automotive programs and its new craft beer program. The grant will be combined with GRCC’s $983,309.41 in matching funds, approximately $700,000 of which was provided by two donors.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A Grand Rapids Community College union representing clerical workers has voted to cut ties with the Michigan Education Association, with supporters of the move arguing the MEA’s dues were too expensive.

Nursing supervisor loses discrimination case in white patient’s care at Mary Free Bed

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by a black nursing supervisor who said she was not allowed to care for a white patient at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital because his family requested no black caregivers.

… Crane, who has a master’s degree in nursing and taught courses at Michigan State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Baker College and Davenport University, also claimed she was subject to discrimination and retaliation when she was not promoted to Director of Education at Mary Free Bed.

Paul Hernandez will talk to students and the public about how he overcame poverty and street gang culture to achieve his educational and professional dreams.  Paul Hernandez, author of “The Pedagogy of Real Talk: Engaging, Teaching, and Connecting with Students At Risk,” will share his story and his strategies for overcoming barriers in both college and life at 5 p.m. March 18 in room 108 of GRCC’s Sneden Hall, 415 Fulton St. This talk is free and open to the public.
