Snyder promotes skilled trade jobs at competition

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The 2015 Skills USA state competition kicked off Saturday morning at the Grand Rapids Community College Applied Technology Center and Gov. Rick Snyder was there for the event.

Area high school grads making an impact on college sports scene

The winter season has come to an end for local college athletes and the spring season is hitting its stride on the college sports scene. Following is a look at some area high school graduates who have been making their mark on the college scene:

Byron Center graduate Kurt Sprague is off to a strong start with the Grand Rapids Community College golf team. Sprague captured medalist honors by defeating teammate Zach Bialek in a one-hole, sudden-death playoff at the Grand Rapids Invitational at Egypt Valley. Sprague finished with a 74 for 18 holes and helped the Raiders win the team championship.

… Former Wyoming basketball standout Jayla Branch completed a productive first season of college basketball at Grand Rapids Community College. A freshman forward for the Raiders, Branch was second in scoring this season as she averaged 12.6 points per game. Branch earned all-conference honorable mention in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference.
