Senior wellness: Universal design makes homes accessible

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)–As people get older, they may need to make physical adjustments to compensate. One of those changes includes modifying homes to meet needs through Universal Design.

GRCC men’s golf team takes first place at Calvin Knight Invite

PIERSON — The Calvin men’s golf team hosted the Knight Invite on Tuesday at Pilgrim’s Run Golf Club. Grand Rapids Community College took first place with a team score of 316 with Calvin right behind at 317.

See the enormous championship rings made for Ferris State football team

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Ferris State University football coaches got a sneak peek Tuesday at the 2014 GLIAC championship rings that will be given to the team this week.

… This will be the sixth career ring for (Tony) Annese, who led Muskegon High School to three state titles and Grand Rapids Community College to two national championships. Annese has also had coaching stops at Jenison, Montrose and Ann Arbor Pioneer high schools.

Golf team wins tournament

The GRCC Raider Golf Team came away with a big tournament victory Tuesday in brutal playing conditions, winning the Knight Invite hosted by Calvin College. Competing against Hope, Calvin, Davenport, Cornerstone, Aquinas, Trine, and Huntington, the Raiders defeated all the four-year schools by edging Calvin by one stroke for the victory. Zach Bialik, a sophomore from Manistee Catholic Central, who was awarded the night before with the GRCC Male Athlete of the Year Award, shot an amazing one under par 72, in terrible conditions, to win Medalist honors. The Raiders are back in action Friday at the MCC Invite at Thoroughbred Golf Course.

Deadline for Van & Marinus Swets Travel Award is April 30

The GRCC Foundation announces the VAN & MARINUS SWETS TRAVEL AWARD OPPORTUNITY FOR GRCC EMPLOYEES (nonstudent employees).

DEADLINE: Thursday, April 30, 2015

This travel award is for fun, enjoyment, and relaxation. It is not intended to supplement any faculty, staff or administrator’s professional development travel funds. A cash award of up to $400 will be given to any full- or part-time GRCC employee who completes the following requirements and has his or her essay judged the best to fulfill the employee’s intention to relax, enjoy and have fun.

Requirements:

  1. Submit an essay (500 words or less) telling how you intend to use the cash award for fun, enjoyment, relaxation. The more unusual, the better!
  2. Essays will not be judged on spelling, writing style, organization, usage or grammar.
  3. Essays may be hand-written or typed. Do not put your name on the essay. Attach to the essay a sealed envelope containing your name and phone number. Write the last four numbers of your Social Security number in the upper right hand corner of the first page of the essay and on the outside of the envelope. Send the essay and envelope to Mary Reed, Grand Rapids Community College Foundation Office. All essays must be received by Thursday, April 30, 2015
  4. All award winners will be notified by May 8, 2015.

Winners of Math Awareness Month contest

The correct answer to the Math Awareness Month Contest was ten doors were left unlocked.

Of all the correct entries, five students and five staff were randomly drawn to receive a prize. A big thank you goes out to the GRCC Bookstore for the generous prize donation.

Jodi Richhart to participate in Police Unity Tour

Jodi Richhart, of GRCC’s Police Academy, will be part of the West Michigan Team for the 2015 Police Unity Tour. Team members will leave May 8 for New Jersey to ride their bikes to the National Police Memorial in Washington. They are riding on behalf of their agencies and for officers who have died in the line of duty.

Join West Michigan Team members from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 1 at Rosa Park Circle to wish them well on their trip! Donations are not required (but much appreciated).
