GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Steep tuition increases and faculty buyouts are among the ways Grand Rapids Community College is cutting a projected budget deficit of between $2 and $5 million, due to declining enrollment.

Undersheriff to retire from Kent County

Undersheriff Jon Hess announced last week that he plans to retire June 1.

… Hess graduated from Ottawa Hills High School, and received an Associate of Science from Grand Rapids Community College. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice from Southern Illinois University.

College notes: Trio of freshmen from GR pitch like veterans for Division I schools

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Freshmen don’t usually play. Well, not much anyways.

Most are redshirted and have to wait their turn.

… Brendan Bender, Davenport University: The two-way player was voted by the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. Bender, a senior first baseman and left-handed pitcher, has been one of the top hitters in the conference. Bender (Grandville/GRCC) finished second in the league hitting .422 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI. He also has 14 doubles and five triples. In 10 starts on the mound, he is 6-1 with a 1.65 ERA. In addition he struck out 32 batters and held them to a .232 average.

GRCC celebrates Active Commute Week

Next week Monday through Friday is Active Commute Week here in West Michigan! We’d love to have you join us in actively commuting to work or to run your daily errands!

Walking, riding your bike, taking the bus and even roller blading can be forms of active commuting. Again this year GRCC is partnering with many other colleges and corporations to host this week and be a part of the employer challenge.

We end the week with National Bike to Work Day and this year there will be many pit stops along the way along with 10 bike trains to join up with.

GRCC team wins nailing, recycling competitions during fundraiser

On Thursday, the Tassell M-TEC hosted the Construction Workforce Development Alliance for a scholarship fundraiser. There were competitions between many of the employer teams. GRCC formed a team with our partners at Michigan Works. The GRCC portion of the team was led by two valiant faculty members: Keith Ferguson and Kyle Lackscheide. They were impressive and led GRCC to victories in the nailing event and the recycling event. Thank you to all who made the evening such a success!

Raider Salute to HVAC, facilities employees

A big raider salute to the college HVAC and facilities team from Workforce Training:

There was a large event for the construction industry at the M-TEC on Thursday night. During the day on Thursday, the air conditioning chiller went down. Dorothy Paradis, Carol Kramer, Hayden Butcher, Steve Schuller, Wes Casacrz, Scott Miklaszewski and Joe Milito came to the rescue.  Thank you so much for your extra effort to make sure our 200 guests were cool during the scholarship fund-raising event. You are appreciated by the M-TEC team!
