Grand Rapids Community College has partnered with Western Michigan University to create a seamless path for its students to transfer into the university’s programs, according to a statement.
GRCC to name two buildings after faculty members

Holland, Mich. — Two buildings at Grand Rapids Community College will be renamed after two faculty members.
Aquinas volleyball splits to finish Cardinal Stritch Invitational

Milwaukee, WI- The Aquinas College volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of the Cardinal Stritch Wolves Invitational to finish the tournament 3-1.
… Aquinas dropped the opening match of the day against College of St. Mary 3-0 (25-14, 28-26, 26-24). Sophomore Camille Means (Kentwood/East Kentwood) led the Saints with 12 kills, while Micaela Hazen (North Branch/GRCC) added 11. Means also led the Saints with 20 digs.
SSPD Grants: September 2015 Funding Opportunity
The deadline for the submission of grant applications for the Support Staff Professional Development (SSPD) program is 4:30 p.m., September 18, 2015. The SSPD application packet and SSPD Guidelines are available in the GRCC Internal Grants area of the Grants Department website at www.grcc.edu/sspdgrants. Please note that applications must include a supervisor’s approval form, a budget form, and budget documentation. Armen Awards expands to add fall participation
All faculty are invited to participate in this years Armen Awards – Excellence in Service Learning.
Now in its sixth year, the Armen Awards is a competition where faculty and community partners form teams to create service learning projects for shared impact.
Service learning makes a difference in the lives of our students as part of their educational processes, their development as a professional and as a responsible citizen.

New this year is the chance to participate in the Fall semester!
By participating in the Armen Awards, the College will produce a professional video highlighting your service learning project, a celebration event honoring your teams efforts, a chance to win up to $3,000 and an opportunity to share your hard work on a local network morning show.

A specific inventory listing will be available the day of the sale.

GRCC preschoolers helped break ground on their new state-of-the-art facility on Thursday. President Dr. Steven C. Ender also announced at the ceremony that the new preschool would be named for Phyllis Fratzke, who created the program in the 1970s. He also announced that the Music Center will be renamed for music professor Albert P. Smith, who was chairman of the fine arts and foreign language division.

Referee Jerry Hendrickson starts 53rd (and final) season with sons by his side

… Over the years, (Jerry) Hendrickson, who later spent nearly 47 years as an educator at Davenport University and Grand Rapids Community College, has kept intact a crew with his sons Dan and Steve along with Debbaudt, Benedict and Stone, who will step aside Friday so Jon can work with family members.
Fall Tutor Training – Meeting the needs of our changing population
Academic Support & Tutoring Services held Fall tutor training sessions this week in preparation for the start of the semester. Over 100 tutors participated in team building activities and workshops that included topics on Time Management, Role of the Tutor, Working with today’s students in difficult situations, and a Title IX overview. The two days of training culminated with an award presentation for those tutors who have achieved Level 1 CRLA Tutor Certification.
Our tutoring staff is ready to meet the needs of our changing student population and is proud to continue in the long history of commitment to student success through tutoring and academic support.

Student Life welcomes new employees
With a lot of transition in the Office of Student Life and Conduct, we wanted to introduce the new employees you will see around campus. Please take time to stop and introduce yourself!
Ashleigh Begres has been working in the Office of Student Life since January 2015. She serves as graduate assistant for campus programming and is the advisor for Campus Activities Board. Ashleigh completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Higher Education Student Affairs at GVSU. During her free time, she enjoys hiking and playing sports.
Bruné Garcia will serve as the new Service and Technology Coordinator, with responsibility for the RaiderCard system and front desk service management/oversight. Brune has been working at GRCC since September 2004 as student employee, contingency for a year in 2008 and full time since 2009. During his free time he enjoys spending time with him family and friends. Bruné was born in the Dominican Republic and has lived in Grand Rapids for the majority of his adult life. He attended GRCC and earned his Associates in Arts. After he attended Ferris State University and graduated with his Bachelors in Business Administration, Cum Laude.
Dr. Ginger Randall is going to be working part-time to help manage student conduct concerns. Ginger worked in Student Services at Grand Valley State University for 27 years. Initially, she worked in an office providing services to international students, minority students and students with disabilities as well as coordinating the student discipline system. Later, as Associate Dean of Students, she focused on discipline and coordinated recruitment and training for graduate assistants in a Master’s of Education program. Since retiring in 2013, she has enjoyed her volunteer work with the Women’s Resource Center, AARP/IRS income tax program for seniors and with Senior Leadership Grand Rapids.
Kaylee Wolff is a new graduate assistant for service initiatives. She will have oversight of the food pantry, in addition to supporting front desk operations, working on student education initiatives and the gown recycling program. She is in her first year in the Master’s of Education program in Higher Education with an emphasis in College Student Affairs Leadership at Grand Valley State University. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in political science in 2015 from Grand Valley. Kaylee comes from the beautiful city of Muskegon on West Michigan’s lakeshore. She enjoys reading, being outdoors and spending time with friends and family.
In addition to the new staff, several office functions have shifted based on staff transitions. Some examples include:
- Molly Maczka is the new contact for Stall Street Journal, the daily management of club/organizations, and is providing support to do conduct background checks and appointment scheduling.
- Evan Macklin is advising Student Alliance and has oversight of OrgSync.
Until a new Director is hired, some of the work of our office is being managed in other areas, such as:
- John Cowles is chairing the student Behavioral Intervention Team
- Tina Hoxie/Cathy Noviskey have oversight of the Student Feedback Management Team
