Community colleges earn Achieving the Dream certification

Based on their commitment to improving the success of minority and low-income students, a pair of community colleges have earned a national certification.

Achieving the Dream, a national nonprofit network dedicated to community college student success, said last week that Grand Rapids Community College and Muskegon Community College are among the 19 institutions certified as 2015 Achieving the Dream Leader Colleges.

… VOLLEYBALL: The Jayhawks extended their win streak to six Sunday with victories against Cuyahoga and Oakland in the final day of the Raider Challenge in Grand Rapids. Rachel Brown (28 kills, 5 blocks), Jane Kuipers (25 kills, 3 blocks), Lindsey Jacobs (89 assists, 8 kills, 30 digs) and Marissa Hassevoort (53 digs) led the Jayhawks. On Saturday, MCC didn’t drop a set in wins against Mott and Alpena. Brown (19 kills, 4 blocks), Kuiper (18 kills, 5 blocks), Jacobs (55 assists) and Hassevoort (36 digs) were team leaders. MCC (13-10) travels to face Ancilla College on Tuesday.

… GOLF: The Jayhawks placed runner-up in their past two tournaments, including the Muskegon Community Invitational at Stonegate Golf Club on Sunday. Connor Phelps was medalist with a 73 to help the Jayhawks to a 302 team total. Dylan Krim added 74, Cam Phelps had 76 and Noah Genson added 79 for MCC. Grand Rapids Community College finished first with a 293.

Mich. Democrats in G.R. announce proposed tax credits

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) — Michigan Democrats on Monday outlined a plan they say will improve life for middle-class families in Michigan.

… “This plan will help me because student loans get so so expensive for me — and a lot of my friends who go to bigger universities,” said Grand Rapids Community College student Diana Worsley. “[They] definitely have a lot more student debt than I do.”
