Local community colleges say they have steps in place to handle deadly school shootings like the one in Oregon. Police at Grand Rapids Community College say they prepare for active shooting situations. They work with Grand Rapids city police on drills and reviews of their readiness. But they say the best way to prevent an attack is through faculty members working with counselors to spot unusual behavior from students.

Gov. Rick Snyder makes appointments to Midwest Higher Education Compact

LANSING, Mich. — Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Steven Ender, of Grand Rapids, Karen McPhee, of Lowell, and Brian Whiston, of Okemos, to the Midwestern Higher Education Compact.

… Ender is president of Grand Rapids Community College, a position he has held since 2009. He has experience with Westmoreland County Community College, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Ender earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Virginia Commonwealth University and both a master’s in student personnel in higher education and a doctorate of education in counseling and student personnel services from the University of Georgia.

Superintendente de las Escuelas Públicas de Grand Rapids llama a votar por bonos para las escuelas

La Superintendente expresó, que esta vez el objetivo de los bonos no solamente será para mejorar las estructuras y los edificios escolares, sino que será parte del Plan de Transformación que lleva a cabo la institución donde se incluyen aspectos relacionados con el aprovechamiento académico de los estudiantes: Nuestros estudiantes merecen lo mejor, tanto en lo que al personal académico se refiere como a los recursos que la tecnología nos ofrece hoy día, dijo la Superintendente.

… La Superintendente por otro lado destacó, que en esta ocasión la campaña en pro de los bonos escolares está respaldada por amplios e importantes sectores de la comunidad. Entre otros citó: El Consejo de Educación del distrito, la Asociación de Maestros, la Asociación de oficiales de la Policía, Miembros de la legislatura estatal, el Procurador del Kent County William Forsyth, Sheriff Lawrence Stelma, el Consejo de las escuelas Cristianas de Grand Rapids, miembros representantes del Consejo de la Ciudad, el ex Alcalde John Logie, comisionados del Condado de Kent, miembros del Consejo del Grand Rapids Community College y otros importantes líderes de la comunidad religiosa y política.
