Community colleges can diversify skill sets

LANSING — Community colleges serve as educational stepping-stones to higher learning institutions and trade schools, creating a gateway for students who want to advance their education, enter the workforce or enrich their skills.

The trade aspect of a job training program creates an opportunity for students to efficiently become part of the workforce, said Wayne Rodgers, a welding and fabrication professor at Grand Rapids Community College.

Free & reduced-cost dental visits at GRCC

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– Grand Rapids Community College offers dental visits at a fraction of the cost, while allowing students to obtain the experience they need.

There will be a campus wide Fall Open House, Saturday, October 31.

It’ll be from 10 am to 1 pm at GRCC’s downtown campus. The cost is free.

New center in GR helps youth in need

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — On the first of the month, a new center opened in Grand Rapids to help youth in need of help.

Muskegon ties between coaching staffs for OK Black showdown

MUSKEGON, MI — Coaches Shane Fairfield of Muskegon and Matt Koziak of Mona Shores will be on opposite sidelines in tonights OK Black football showdown.

… Koziak and Fairfield both fall under the coaching tree of Tony Annese and Koziak said 95 percent of what he learned about the game came from Annese. Annese spent nine seasons at Muskegon and led the Big Reds to state championships in 2004, 2006 and 2008 before going on to take over programs at Grand Rapids Community College and now Ferris State.

City eyes housing strategy

After six months of investigation, Grand Rapids has a strategic plan ready to target housing issues in the city.

… “There is tremendous momentum in this community. I think we have some good guidelines here. They need to be fleshed out, but I would encourage the commission to endorse the work that has been done so far,” said (City Commissioner Ruth) Kelly. “I think we need to include Grand Rapids Public (Schools), GRCC, GVSU, our senior advocates, and those who are not yet on board. We will go after them and seek their support. I think we can do this with those partners.”

Transfer Fair scheduled for October 21

The Counseling and Career Center holds an annual College Transfer Fair in the fall semester. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the transfer schools they intend to transfer to or to help students find a transfer school. You can pick up catalogs, applications and information about scholarships. We invited over 40 schools to participate in the event.

GRCC hosts statewide choral festival

The GRCC Music Department will be hosting a statewide choral festival for community college choirs throughout Michigan: The Michigan Community College Choral Festival to be held on Wednesday, November 4 at the St. Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids.

The event will features choirs from community colleges throughout the state including Lansing Community College, Mott Community College, Northwestern Michigan College, Washtenaw Community College, Macomb Community College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College and the Grand Rapids Community College Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers.

The festival begins at 8:30 a.m. with performances by individual choirs who will have the opportunity to work with our guest clinicians, Dr. Kimberly Dunn Adams.

The festival will culminate in a concert at 2:30 p.m. at St. Cecilia Music Center with choral performances from each individual choir and a performance with the massed choir of all festival participants under the direction of Dr. Dunn.

The concert is free and open to the public.
