Alumnus Duy Duong-Tran to present Mathematics Seminar

The Grand Rapids Community College Mathematics Department is pleased to announce that it will host its first Mathematics Seminar of 2016 on Wednesday, January 27, 3:00-4:00 PM in 101 Cook.  Our speaker, former GRCC student Duy Duong-Tran, will discuss applications of Statistics in the area quality control.  The title and abstract of his talk are below.

Duy’s talk will appeal to a wide audience, and anyone with an interest in engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, health-care management, nursing, etc. is encouraged to attend.  An introductory statistics course, such as MA 215, would be helpful for a full appreciation of the discussion.  Of course, as always, everyone is welcome.

Pop and cookies will be served at 2:45 PM.

“Out of Control” in Statistical Process Control: Meaning and “Prevention”

The practice of six-sigma is well-established in many areas of industry that involve repetitive processes and outputs. In this talk we will discuss control chart performance, what could happen if a process is “out-of-control”, and recent developments in control charting techniques. Surprisingly, statistical control models are not only implemented in traditional industries such as automotive and pharmaceutical, but also in unexpected areas such as health care management and health surveillance.

Recognize an outstanding adult learner at GRCC

For nearly 15 years, GRCC has been involved with the Grand Rapids Area Higher Education Network (GRAHEN), a local education organization that honors the accomplishments of non-traditional students.

Once again I am requesting your help…

Please support our adult and non-traditional students at GRCC by nominating them for the Grand Rapids Area Higher Education (GRAHEN) annual Outstanding Adult Learner (OAL) award. The OAL Banquet, which will be held this year on Wednesday April 20,2016 recognizes and honors the academic achievements, leadership, and community contributions of adult students from local higher education institutions.

I am asking GRCC faculty and staff members to nominate individuals (adult and non-traditional students) from the 2015-2016 school year. The deadline for nominations is February 26.

Please contact Angela Salinas at ext. 3420 or angelasalinas@grcc.edu with any questions and/or to request a nomination form.
