Mathematics Seminar is today

The Grand Rapids Community College Mathematics Department is pleased to announce that it will host its next Mathematics Seminar on Wednesday, April 20, 3:00-4:00 PM in 101 Cook.  Our speaker, GRCC student Logan Gaastra, will discuss the infinite, divergent series, and hyperreal numbers.  The title and abstract of his talk are below.

Logan’s talk will focus on ideas related to the study of infinite sequences and series.  Parts of his presentation will appeal to a general audience, while other topics may be more accessible to those with knowledge of Calculus 2.  As always, everyone is welcome.

Pop and cookies will be served at 2:45 PM.

How Hilbert’s Infinite Hotel

Can be Used to

Evaluate Divergent Series

Everyone knows that infinity plus one is still infinity, but did you know that we can use this property to assign values to divergent series?  We will use the famous thought experiment of David Hilbert and basic knowledge of hyperreal numbers to systematically assign real values to certain divergent series.  We will also look at other famous examples of attempts to assign values to divergent series, and examine their veracity against our system.
