Michigan man who bit off piece of mom’s nose to stand trial

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. — A man who was pepper-sprayed by Grand Rapids police to release his bite on his mother’s nose will stand trial on several charges stemming from the May 2 melee on the city’s southwest side.

… He’d (Travis Kyle Herndon) been taking classes at Grand Rapids Community College and occasionally stayed with his mother on Watson Street SW, court records show.

Financial literacy contest pays off for student

Learning about financial literacy has added $10,000 to a Grand Rapids Community College student’s tuition fund thanks to a sweepstakes sponsored by American Student Assistance’s SALT financial literacy program.

Local man receives National Endowment for the Humanities award

Mike D. Miller, of Wayland, has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities stipend for a summer institute teaching “Beowulf” in the context of Old Norse-Icelandic literature at Western Michigan University.

… Miller works at Mythopoeia Games Publications, Grand Rapids Community College and Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University.

The Michigan ACE Women’s Network will present its Distinguished Woman Leadership Awards to two people during the annual conference, June 6-7 in Lansing.

… 2016 recipients are Margaret Crouch, professor of history and philosophy at Eastern Michigan University; and Patti Trepkowski, associate provost and dean of instruction support and interdisciplinary studies at Grand Rapids Community College.

Mona Shores standout selected Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame female athlete winner

MUSKEGON, MI — Kennedy Potts knew it was coming.

… For athletics, Potts was at her best of the volleyball court. She was an all-region selection as a libero and also made academic all-state. She was all-conference three times playing in the OK Black, played AAU in the winter and has received a scholarship to play at Grand Rapids Community College.

GRCC Scholarship Golf Outing

The GRCC Foundation hosted its annual scholarship golf outing on Wednesday, May 25th.  The outing was held at Thousand Oaks. There were 120 golfers who took part in a golf scramble on a hot sunny day!  The proceeds from this outing provide scholarship dollars for our students — so thank you to all who made it happen!
