Man shoots self at Spectrum Butterworth

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Police say a 26-year-old man is dead after he shot himself in the head Wednesday just outside the Spectrum Butterworth Hospital emergency room.

… (Sgt. Terry) Dixon said a vehicle linked to the man was later located at the Grand Rapids Community College parking ramp at Fountain Street NE and Ransom Avenue.  He said after searching the vehicle investigators determined there was no threat to the area.

School district estimates Middle College graduates saved $723K

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Kenowa Hills Middle College students who graduated in May from Davenport University with an associate’s degree – as well as a high-school diploma – saved $723,533 in college expenses, according to the school board.

… The programs are gaining popularity in the state. More than two dozen new early/middle college programs and schools opened this school year in Michigan, including in Cedar Springs in partnership with Grand Rapids Community College.

… GRCC also will launch programs this fall with Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Ottawa Hills High School and the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District.

2016 MAPA Educational Development Scholarship Fund Recipients Announced

The Michigan Automotive Parts Association (MAPA) has announced the recipients of MAPA’s 2016 Educational Development Scholarship Fund, chosen by Lansing’s Capital Region Community Foundation. Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded, in addition to a $500 scholarship for the recipient of the 2016 Jud Morrison Memorial Achievement of Excellence Award.

… Brooke Peckham, sponsored by Auto-Wares Group of Companies located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Peckham will be a sophomore enrolled at Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, majoring in human resource management to support the growing car care industry in the fall of 2016. Brooke is the daughter of Charles and Merriea Lubben of Cedar Springs, Michigan. Brooke was awarded the distinguished 2016 Jud Morrison Memorial Achievement of Excellence Award named in memory of MAPA co-founding father and past chairman of the board of directors, Justin H. Morrison. Brooke’s academic achievements and outstanding community service record exemplify the high standards and commitment to excellence that Jud Morrison stood for.

Capron completes first season at GRCC; Comets add JV coach

Grand Rapids Community College freshman Devin Capron carded scores of 79, 74, 82 and 80 to finish in a tie for 78th place last week in the NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.

… To the more than 30,000 students he (Howard Shanken) served at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) until his retirement in 2010, he was the registrar, a touchpoint who helped newbies and returning students through the maze of admissions and registration for classes each succeeding semester.
