GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (WOOD) — More than 70 years ago, when America was embroiled in World War II, something amazing happened, women from all over the United States made a sacrifice for their country.  Those women were trained, as civilians, to become military pilots, members of WASP, Women Air Force Service Pilots. One of those women, 94-year-old Jane Doyle now lives in Grand Rapids.

(This article doesn’t mention it, but Jane Doyle is a Grand Rapids Junior College alumna.)

Advance All-Area North Baseball Team

The 2016 Advance All-Area North Baseball Team features players from a couple of conference champions, including Rockford from the OK Red and Coopersville from the OK Blue. Outstanding pitching and speed on the base paths highlighted the accomplishments of these multi-talented baseball players.

… (Pat) Naughton made a pretty strong battery by himself as Comstock Park’s ace and all-conference selection at catcher. A two-time all-conference selection in the OK Blue as a catcher during his junior season and as a pitcher during his senior campaign Naughton batted .371 with nine doubles. On the mound, he was 4-3 with one save and a 1.28 ERA. An all-state quarterback last fall, Naughton will be playing baseball at Grand Rapids Community College next year.

Sports OT: Kyle Visser on annual basketball camp

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Forest Hills Central grand and former professional basketball player Kyle Visser stopped by Sports Overtime Sunday to talk about his annual basketball camp for West Michigan student athletes.

… His fifth annual Post Play Camp is scheduled for July 11 through July 13 at Grand Rapids Community College’s Ford Fieldhouse. It is open to boys and girls ages 11 to 18.

GRCC geography student awarded scholarship

Acknowledging that her “service and leadership in our community have been exemplary,” Aquinas College just awarded the Hruby Scholarship to Stacey Murphy, who will be completing studies in Geography at GRCC in August. Named in honor of Norbert Hruby, the second president of Aquinas College and a devoted advocate of continuing education for adult students, the Hruby Scholarship is granted to stellar transfer students demonstrating a history of community service and leadership through volunteerism. The Hruby Scholarship funds 50% of tuition, and Ms. Murphy is the second GRCC Geography graduate in recent years to receive this honor specifically designated for non-traditional students. Following her studies at Aquinas, she plans to attend graduate school in Geography.
