An adult always had to open the door when someone knocked to make sure you wouldn’t be robbed. Children were called in from outside before 6 p.m., and most of those kids wouldn’t continue school beyond the third grade.
… (Ramon) Soto married his longtime girlfriend and started attending classes at Grand Rapids Community College, where he obtained an associate’s degree in criminal justice. Along the way, he and his wife, Isi, had a son, so Soto continued to struggle to support his family and get through school.
Rockford’s school year starts smoothly

ROCKFORD, MI — Around 8,000 Rockford Public Schools’ students returned to class Monday, Aug. 29, with relative ease and a great deal of enthusiasm for the new year, according to Superintendent Michael Shibler.
