Is bus rapid transit right for the Lansing region?

EAST LANSING – If 6,000 passengers actually ride the Route 1 bus in a given month, Bill Collette has offered to eat his hat.

Charlevoix’s Way helps MSU to second place finish

Amber Way, a 2015 Charlevoix graduate, finished 48th overall for the Michigan State women’s cross country team as the Spartans placed second at the Roy Griak Invitational at Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 24.

… Thomas VanSlembrouck, a 2015 Petoskey graduate, finished 33rd overall for the Lake Superior State men’s cross country team at the Grand Rapids Community College Invitational on Friday, Sept. 23.

Annual Security Report available

A copy of GRCC’s 2016 Annual Security Report is available for review. This report is required by federal law and contains statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on-campus, in certain non-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by GRCC, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as sexual misconduct, emergency procedures, and other matters.

This report is available online, and you can also request a paper copy by visiting the GRCC Campus Police Department.

Nothing gets lost in translation when Young Farmer Award winner speaks

SPARTA — Upon graduating from Grand Valley State University with triplet undergraduate degrees in international business, economics and Spanish, Nick Schweitzer had to make a difficult choice — accept a job offer from the largest chocolate manufacturer in North America or return to the farm to start digging in the dirt.

… Jose (Meza), who was born in Guanajuato, Mexico, came to the U.S. at age 5. He is currently attending Grand Rapids Community College and hopes to return to Grand Valley State to complete his business degree. He said he and Nick talk about college, and he considers Nick a trusted friend whom he seeks advice from.

Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) has awarded me my most cherished opportunities and milestones. In April of this year, I was the first in my family to receive a college degree. I was also recently awarded The 2016 Women’s Salute Award, an honor given on behalf of the Bob and Alecia Woodrick Center for Equity and Inclusion. I was chosen out of 18,000 students and presented with this award thanks to my volunteerism and mentorship in our community.

Hilda Martinez-Gutierrez joins Counseling Center

GRCC received a 3-year grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that will fund campus-wide activities and programs designed to address and reduce students’ suicide risk by enhancing overall mental health and wellness on campus. The services will also be extended to the Lakeshore campus. Activities include creating a strong community network, implementing a Crisis Response Plan, and providing training and education to promote awareness of the need for better understanding of mental health issues and to encourage positive help-seeking behaviors.

The grant will be coordinated out of the Counseling & Career Development office.  The grant cycle begins on September 30, 2016.  The new Grant Coordinator (a grant funded position) will be Hilda Martinez-Gutierrez.  Hilda is an alumni of GRCC who went on to earn her BS in Family Studies at WMU and her MA in Counselor Education/ College Counseling at WMU.  Hilda worked at GRCC as a student but more recently has been doing her internship with the GRCC TRIO program.  Hilda has a passion for working with first generation, under privileged students.  She is bilingual and has diverse experience in enrollment services, family services, coordinating a youth enrichment scholarship program, and has advocated for substance abuse prevention in Greater Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.  We welcome Hilda to the GRCC team that will be implementing the grant work and are excited to have her experience and connections as a part of our team.

Visual Arts Department seeks ArtPrize volunteers

The Visual Arts Department needs volunteers to help greet our guests for ArtPrize and direct them to the GRCC Collins Art Gallery on the 4th floor of the Main Building.  We need volunteers from Sept 23 – October 9 on Fridays 12-8, Saturdays 12-8, and Sundays 12-6.

Muskegon Community College golf team finishes third at its own tournament

The Muskegon Community College golf team finished third at its own invitational tournament over the weekend at Thoroughbred Golf Club.

Grand Rapids Community College won the event with 324 points, followed by Jackson College (343), MCC (353), the Ancilla College Gold team (367) and the Ancilla College Red team (409).

IT to offer Google workshops!

Information Technology is pleased to announce that we will be facilitating three Google Workshops in the coming weeks! Do you have an idea that you’d like to try in your classroom and/or office that would work using the Google Drive tools, but can’t determine how to make it happen? Or would you simply like some one-on-one training in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms? Come join us for an open session offering one-on-one assistance with making your ideas happen! This session allows users to bring their ideas to life and offers additional training opportunities for those simply looking to learn more about the tools we rolled out earlier this fall.

This workshop will be held in the Main building room 351 on the following dates:

• Tuesday, October 18 (1-4 PM)
• Thursday, October 27 (8 AM-12 PM)
• Monday, November 14 (8 AM – 12 PM)

This is an open format session for walk-ins, join us at any time during the workshop for help, no need to stay the whole time! The room has 16 computers available for your use, however you are welcome to bring a laptop instead.

There will be an informational advising presentation held at 10:15 a.m. and repeated at 11:30am in Calkins 406 that is for all students, regardless of major. This presentation will be given by Counseling and Transfer Center staff  and cover information pertaining to earning an associate degree, earning the MTA designation, scheduling and choosing classes, online tools, graduation, transfer, and MORE. Everyone is welcome.

An additional drop-in advising day event will be held Thursday, November 10th drop-in from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. in Calkins Science Building 125/127
