Youth football coach had a passion for life, kids

LANSING – The Mighty Mites of the Kappa Express football program were playing in the championship game, seven- and eight-year-olds on the field at the Hope Sports Complex, fighting to win.

… Jibreel Goins attended Everett and Sexton high schools, where he played running back and defensive back. He went on to Grand Rapids Community College where he also played football. He came back to Lansing, then played for the Capitol City Stealth and Lansing Lightning football teams. He loved watching football as child and would often write down plays and practice them in front of the television.

DeWys Manufacturing Inc. Promotes Manufacturing Day to Students and Teachers in the West Michigan Area

DeWys Manufacturing Inc., a West Michigan based metal solutions company, is pleased to announce their involvement with the National Manufacturing Day event for the fourth year in a row. By opening the doors to the public, this helped to promote the skilled trade industry and allow DeWys Mfg. to promote the advanced manufacturing processes they provide their customers.

This year manufacturing week was celebrated in the West Michigan area from October 2nd through October 8th. A total of 3,100 students visited a variety of manufacturing facilities to gain knowledge, participate in tours and hands on activities to better understand the diverse fields in the industry. DeWys Mfg. hosted 155 students from Kent Intermediate School District, Discover Elementary, and Ridge Park Charter Academy. The students received a tour of the shop, participated in a team building activity, and explored the MCAM trailer provided by Grand Rapids Community College. Along with the tours given to students throughout the week, DeWys Manufacturing hosted 15 math and science teachers organized through the Kent ISD called Teachers in the Industry. This event consisted of the teachers taking a mechanical reasoning test to show the initial steps taken in the hiring process, a short video on DeWys Manufacturing, and a question and answer panel with four of the DeWys team members. This allowed the teachers to learn from the team members about career paths in manufacturing.

Parents plan forum for 9 vying for Grand Rapids School Board

Jayhawks volleyball team wraps up regular season with a victory over Ancilla

The Muskegon Community College volleyball team completed a successful regular season Thursday by going on the road and beating Ancilla College 3-1.

… The team finished in second place in the conference, two games behind champion Grand Rapids Community College.

Michigan lawyers extend helping hand during Pro Bono Month

From the tip of the Thumb to the depths of the Great Lakes, the State Bar of Michigan is working to meet the legal needs of low-income Michiganders with a robust pro bono celebration throughout the month of October and beyond.

… Lawyers will assist green card holders apply to become U.S. citizens at a Naturalization Workshop. No prior immigration experience is necessary. All attorneys will be trained through a 50-minute YouTube webinar and a short, on-site orientation. Once trained and oriented, volunteers will then prepare the naturalization application with the applicants. Attorneys specializing in immigration law will supervise and review all applications. The event is being held at Grand Rapids Community College on Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Geology students explore Upper Peninsula

This October, students enrolled in the Physical Science Department’s geology program joined students from Grand Valley State University and Muskegon Community College in the Upper Peninsula to explore evidence of our continent’s tumultuous beginning. Students used their geology skills to study 1-2 billion year-old rocks exposed in the Marquette area. They moved from the “sea to the shore” as they identified submarine lava flows, beach sands now faulted and tilted to a near-vertical angle, ancient life forms called stromatolites, and stacked beds of pure iron ore deposited in Precambrian seas. Students returned to the Lower Peninsula with backpacks full of rocks and bellies full of pasties.

Exercise Science students participate in Make A Difference Day

Students and faculty from the Exercise Science Department participated in service learning on Make A Difference Day, Saturday, October 22nd.  The group learned about their community partner’s mission and those that they serve. Time was spent packaging food that will be shipped out to local pantries for families in West Michigan and beyond.

Three films will be shown at GVSU Loosemore Auditorium, and three films to be shown at GRCC’s ATC auditorium. Admission to all the films, which may contain adult content, is free. When possible please encourage students to attend.

Psychology of political beliefs, why people prefer certain political parties

Dr. Frank Conners, who is also the Psychology Department Head, recognizes the polarizing divide in the nation and believes the first step in bridging the gap is understanding why one party resonates with certain people.

World’s leading female classical guitarist Lily Afshar to play Hope College; 22-year-old French guitar star Thibaut Garcia stops at GRCC

Lily Afshar, declared one of the world’s foremost classical guitarists by Public Radio International, is performing Friday at Hope College in Holland.

… Kalamazoo, Detroit and Grand Rapids are hosting 22-year-old French classical guitarist Thibaut Garcia, who is on a 50-city tour of the U.S. and Canada as the winner of the prestigious 2015 Guitar Foundation of America’s International Solo Competition.

Garcia is presenting the second concert of Grand Rapids Community College’s International Guitar Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 3) at Fountain Street Church.

American Seating Hosted Manufacturing Day Event for Union High School Students

American Seating welcomed more than 50 students, teachers and other leaders from Union High School and Grand Rapids Public Schools for a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers.

… The event additionally included presentations by American Seating team members as well as representatives from Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Rapids Community Foundation, who spoke about local manufacturing-education programs and scholarship opportunities.

GVSU and GRCC collaborate on first film festival

Grand Rapids Community College and Grand Valley State University’s French clubs have teamed up to bring the first annual Tournees French Film Festival to Grand Rapids Wednesday, Oct. 26 through Friday, Nov. 8.

Rattlers Bolster Secondary with Three New DBs

Phoenix, Ariz. – The Arizona Rattlers announced today that they have signed three defensive backs their inaugural season in the Indoor Football League (IFL). Damond Smith and Anttonio Brown join the team as rookies, while Nathan Lindsey will begin his second season in the league.

… Lindsey attended Fort Hays State University where he was a two-year starter for the Tigers, and in that time he recorded 113 tackles and three interceptions. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Lindsey also attended, Grand Rapids Community College and Eastern Arizona before eventually transferring to Fort Hays State.

Site visits planned for Nov. 4 and 11 for copier, printer review

Konica Minolta will be on campus November 4, starting at 11:30 a.m., and Michigan Office Solutions on November 11 at 8:00 a.m. to do a walk-through for a better look at campus copier/printers and their use. This is in preparation of bidding on the next replacement of equipment. They have been instructed to wear proper identification and not to take a lot of staff time in questions. If you have time and can answer any questions on how you use the equipment, they would appreciate it, and if not, they will understand.

Leadership Institute 2017 deadline extended

The Grand Rapids Community College Leadership Institute is a 12-month leadership program committed to strengthening new or emerging leaders from across campus. This program is geared to foster a broader understanding of the campus community, accelerate talent development, and hone individual and team leadership skills. The Leadership Institute is designed for individual employees who have the capacity and desire to make a positive influence on our campus. Leadership Institute includes content pertinent to talent identification, leadership development, and addressing issues relevant to the college community.

…In its 13th year, the Opera Grand Rapids Collegiate Vocal Competition is open to student vocalists being trained full-time at one of Opera Grand Rapids’ seven West Michigan area colleges and universities in the Opera Grand Rapids Collegiate Consortium. The consortium includes Aquinas College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University and Western Michigan University.
