The Handshake Deal: 25 Years of Collaboration in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Sometimes a handshake is a just a handshake. And sometimes a simple handshake can become the foundation of a partnership that changes thousands of lives. Such was the case when Ferris State University President J. William Wenrich and Grand Rapids Community College President Richard Calkins met in the late 1980s to discuss a collaboration between their schools.

York College to induct York natives and renowned educator into Athletic Hall of Fame

The achievements of York natives Misty (Wellman) Brestel ’02 and Ashley (Wellman) Waldrep ’07, and renowned educator Bill Pink ’87 will be celebrated as they are inducted into the York College Athletic Hall of Fame during a luncheon ceremony on Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m.

… Teammates, colleagues, and players hes coached describe Dr. Bill Pink as a talented player and teacher, with a kind word for all as he strives for excellence on the court and in the classroom.

… Today Pink is the vice president and dean of the School of Workforce Development at Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a frequent presenter at education and athletic conferences throughout the United States. He has served as a board member for many civic organizations. He has been selected twice to participate in an American delegation to China and recently, he was selected for the first cohort of the Aspen Presidential Fellowship, an elite program for future college presidents.

Ajamu Baraka, v.p. candidate for the Green Party: “We have a chance to still have an administration which will have a commitment to social justice.” … Baraka also made a stop at Grand Rapids Community College’s Applied Technology Center to encourage voters about the Green Party last night.

Condolences to Sara and Bayard Brooks

We extend condolences to Sara and Bayard Brooks upon the death of Sara’s mother, Phenita Porter, on October 17. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. October 21 at First Assembly of God Church, 2717 West Road in East Lansing.

Armen Innovation Grants available for faculty

Through the support of entrepreneur and philanthropist Armen Oumedian, Instructional Support will offer grants to GRCC faculty incorporating innovative practices into their curriculum. Grants of up to $500 may be awarded to both full-time and adjunct faculty interested in further developing or implementing a new high-impact educational practice into their classroom during the Winter 2017 semester. Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2016, and the awards will be announced before the end of the fall 2016 semester.
