Small Business Management students visit Moosejaw, Start Garden

On Monday, October 11, GRCC’s BA283 Small Business Management students took a field trip to Moosejaw in downtown Grand Rapids. General Manager Chris Hagist spoke with the students about the recently opened pop-up shop, Moosejaw. Hagist discussed the company philosophy, why a pop-up shop in Grand Rapids, why and how they chose their location, and the toughest part of opening and maintaining a business.

On October 24, the class took a field trip to Start Garden in downtown. Austin Dean, coordinator of planning and staffing, spoke with students about the role Start Garden plays in new business start-ups. He also spoke about Start Garden’s 5×5 Night, where 5 new start-ups have the opportunity to win $5,000 for their business idea. He also discussed their new initiative, the Tech Shop, which is in its initial stages of development. Successful businesses who have used Start Garden include Sportsman Tracker and Varsity News Network.
