Six new Muskegon police officers

A new class of police recruits received their badges from Muskegon Police Chief Jeffrey Lewis on Jan. 17, 2017. Each was sworn in as new officers and took the oath of office, pledging to protect citizens and lead unsullied personal lives.

… He (Steven Clark) attended the police academy at Grand Rapids Community College. Clark has worked for the Roosevelt Park Police Department, Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office and the Montague Police Department.

… Stephen Host grew up in Grand Rapids where he graduated from West Catholic High School. He attended Grand Rapids Community College and then Grand Valley State University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 2015. He attended the police academy at Grand Rapids Community College from which he graduated in October 2016. Host is enlisted in the Michigan Army National Guard and holds the rank of sergeant E-5.

… Adam Sherman was raised and currently resides in Coopersville. He is a licensed EMT and paid on-call firefighter. Sherman attended Grand Rapids Community College where he earned and associate degree in criminal justice and graduated from the police academy in October 2016.

… Max Wozniak grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from East Grand Rapids High School. He first worked in the food service industry before switching careers to law enforcement. Wozniak attended the police academy at Grand Rapids Community College where he also obtained an associate degree in criminal justice in October 2016.

NCMC celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Around the country, the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were celebrated on Monday.

… A workshop luncheon titled Our Changing Community was hosted by Tamber Bustance, manager of Inclusion Services for Grand Rapids Community College’s Bob and Aleicia Woodrick Center for Equity and Inclusion.

Phi Theta Kappa hosts fundraiser during Jan. 27 basketball games

GRCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter will host a second Pie-In-the-Face fundraiser during the home basketball games on Jan. 27.

The chapters is raising money to attend the national Phi Theta Kappa conference in April.

For only $1, you can throw a pie in the face of PTK members attending the game — or anyone else who volunteers. The women’s game starts at 5:30 p.m., and the men’s team takes the court at 7:30 p.m. You will find Phi Theta Kappa near the concession stands at the fieldhouse.

Scholarship application process now open; encourage students to apply

We are pleased to announce that the Grand Rapids Community College Foundation Scholarship Application is now open. Please encourage your students to apply for these great opportunities.

Applicants are considered for over 300 different opportunities by completing the general application. Students can access the scholarship application at https://grcc.academicworks.com/users/sign_in and log in using their GRCC Blackboard log-in credentials.

The deadline to submit scholarship applications is March 15, 2017. Please note that if students have not earned at least 12 credits from GRCC, they must submit a high school transcript. Seniors must submit a transcript showing seven complete semesters.

We highly encourage all students to complete a 2017-2018 FAFSA in order to be considered for the most complete award package.
