Prominent restaurateur, local Latino community leader dies

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Marshall Chavez, owner of the El Sombrero restaurant and prominent Latino community leader in West Michigan, has died.

… In 1969, Chavez open the El Sombrero restaurant in Grand Rapids after he and his family settled in the city nearly two decades prior, his obituary reads. Chavez was born in Cuero, Texas in 1935 but upon moving to West Michigan attended Grand Rapids Community College, formerly Grand Rapids Junior College, and Western Michigan University.

Kentwood Women’s Club awards scholarships

Lisa Giles and Hannah Robinson, both East Kentwood High School seniors, were selected as this year’s Kentwood Women’s Club scholarship recipients.

… She (Robinson) has taken advanced courses in world history, language and composition, literature and biology. She has taken some college-level courses from Davenport University and Grand Rapids Community College. Hannah has been on the Honor Roll for four years and the All Academic Varsity Team two years. For three years she has been in National Honor Society. Her senior class elected her as class president.

BELDING — Dave Glazier is used to allowing freshman players to flourish on his Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) women’s basketball team. Soon, he will have another freshman who can bring a whole new attitude to the Raiders team.

Veteran core leading Hopkins baseball team to strong start

HOPKINS — Led by a strong core of veterans, the Hopkins baseball team is off to a strong start this spring.

… (Zach) Brechting, who is planning to pitch in college at Grand Rapids Community College, has 28 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings pitched. Brechting has allowed just six walks and is holding opposing batters to a .105 batting average.

Practical nursing students organize health fair for seniors

GRCC practical nursing students finished up their semester with a community health fair for senior citizens on Wednesday, April 19. Students presented a variety of topics, such as hypertension, fibromyalgia, diabetes, pneumonia, infection control, nutrition, and many more health-related topics. Blood glucose testing, blood pressure monitoring, hand massages, jeopardy games, and brain exercises were some of the many activities that were offered by the students to help promote healthy living and educate our seniors.
