Change Ups: Wolverine earns historic preservation award

… The following Grand Rapids Community College teams were winners at the recent MWest Challenge student venture competition: Shelby Rose received $1,500 as the second-place winner of the Innovation Showcase People’s Choice Award; Mark Saint Amour and Andrew Johnson won a $750 Impact Award; and Rebecca Peterman won the $500 Impact Award for Wholesome Eats.

Painkillers, heroin take lives of 84 in Kent Co. in 2015

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — They were strangers on earth, but dozens of people who died in 2015 will be forever connected by the way their lives ended.

… Among them were a 20-year-old Grand Rapids Community College student who first tried painkillers with friends as a teen, a 24-year-old man whose got hooked on pain meds after a snowboarding injury, a 25-year-old man who started experimenting with pills and pot with friend in his teen years  and a 30-year-old mom who according to an aunt began experimenting early in life in an effort to escape a tough childhood.

It is a list that starts with her being a college student at Grand Rapids Community College. Along with that, she coaches eighth grade volleyball at a local school. Lastly, she is also a business owner.

Godwin Heights Public Schools, MI — Senior D’Nyszha Brand was accepted into six colleges: Baker College, Ferris State University, Wayne State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Aquinas College and Western Michigan University.

Update: Hot water service restored to ATC

Update: A work-around solution has restored hot water service to the ATC. Permanent repairs are scheduled to begin Tuesday, with little to no interruption of water service.

The ATC water heater blew a gasket over the weekend, and steam and hot water leaked throughout mechanical room. An emergency repair was effected but revealed further damage to heat exchanger that cannot be addressed until Monday at earliest.
