St. Patrick ready for Regional

June 9, 2017; Ionia Sentinel-Standard

PORTLAND — The varsity baseball coaching staff of St. Patrick set a goal this year and there is a certainty that comes with goals. If you set one goal and attain it, good things always come from it. Some coaches put their eye on one thing – a conference title, or maybe even a regional title if they think their team might be good enough heading into a season.

… That foundation comes from (Bryan) Scheurer’s past, and his present. He played ball on St. Patrick fields from 1993-96 and then, without any offers at the next level signed up with Doug Wabeke at Grand Rapids Community College and his nationally acclaimed baseball team. He only played one year at GRCC and they won a national championship. “After your team wins a national championship, you gain a bit more notice,” Scheurer said, tongue in cheek. He jumped on the Chippewa bandwagon, accepting a scholarship from Central Michigan University. He played center and batted lead off for Steve Jaksa and learned some of the intricacies of hitting from Dave Grewe. He earned honors as an Academic All-American and he still holds a place in the Chippewa all-time record books bagging 18 doubles in 2001.
