DACA ending, student unsure of his future in West Michigan

With his first day of college classes tomorrow, Kevin Vazquez is also worried he could soon lose his ability to legally work, drive and continue as a contributing resident of the United States.

… Classes begin Wednesday at Western Michigan University for the recent Grand Rapids Community College graduate. That major turning point in Vazquez’s life comes just one day after another.

Hundreds march through downtown Grand Rapids to protest end of DACA

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Rallies were held across the country on Tuesday after the announcement of the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. That included West Michigan, where hundreds of people marched through downtown Grand Rapids to protest the Trump administration’s decision. The program shields from deportation hundreds of thousands of young immigrants who were brought into the country illegally as children.

… “Thanks to DACA I was able to work, which means I was able to pay for my school,” said (Juan) Mascorro-Guerrero. “I started at GRCC, then transferred to Grand Valley State University.”

Renowned chef teaches students art of running a kitchen

Across Berrien County students are packing up their backpacks and returning to class following summer break. This year, Lake Michigan College students attending courses at the Bertrand Crossing Campus in Niles will have several new classes and lab features to look forward to utilizing this semester.

… (Luis) Amado’s passion for culinary arts was fed by his work in the kitchen. Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Amado was inspired by his father and grandfather’s cooking. In addition to working in his grandfather’s pastry shop, Amado worked as a saucier at the Hyatt Regency in Guadalajara, where he ended up meeting Chef Carl Butenas, who was instructor at Grand Rapids Community College. Butenas offered to sponsor Amado in America, where he would go on to earn a scholarship to study in the culinary arts program at Grand Rapids Community College.

Call for entries for Elkhart Juried Regional

La PORTE COUNTY — The Midwest Museum of American Art is pleased to announce a call for entries to the 39th Elkhart Juried Regional Art Exhibition, Oct. 7 through Dec. 3.

… Awards for 2017 are more than $27,000 and will be selected by the jurors and Purchase Award patrons. The distinguished jurors for this exhibition will be Nick Antonakis, Head of the Art Department, Grand Rapids Community College, and Bill Hosterman, Associate Professor, Art Department, Grand Valley State University, Michigan.

Khale Showers fills quarterback role for Rockford defense

ROCKFORD — When it comes to being a quarterback for a defense, Rockford senior Khale Showers has plenty of experience.

… Khale’s two older sisters are also athletic, as older sister Karliane played softball at Grand Rapids Community College and Brehanna is a gymnast at the University of Oklahoma.
