Spotlight on Sally Brown

Medical surgical nurse Sally Brown got her start in the field as a teen, working as an aide at the Beacon Light nursing home in Marne, Michigan. Although she later held office and factory jobs, a love of caring for those in need returned her to Beacon Light as an adult. When her supervisor there inspired her to pursue her associates degree, Brown attended Grand Rapids Community College en route to becoming an RN. She had married and welcomed her first daughter, Tricia, by then, and ended up having her second, Kelly, while still in school.

Dominga Lucas-Pérez: Raising up indigenous voices of persistence on Grandville Avenue

When asked how to spell her name correctly, Dominga Lucas-Pérez proudly pulls out her Grand Rapids Public School Volunteer badge from her knitted purse. She carries the badge with pride. She explains she has earned the badge after Liliana’s first day in Kindergarten. To her, this badge is a sign that she belongs to the Grandville Avenue community.

… Domingo Hernández-Gómez, the Director of the Bob and Aleicia Woodrick Center for Equity and Inclusion at Grand Rapids Community College, explains that there is perceived negativity around speaking an indigenous language. Hernández-Gómez’s primary language is Tzeltal, a Mayan language spoken in five countries of Central America. Hernández-Gómez spoke Tzeltal until he was eleven years old when he was exposed to Spanish in school.

… Health forum series to focus on health care jobs

The monthly Health Forum of West Michigan series will host its first event of the year, “The Health Care Talent Pipeline,” with a panel discussion focusing on the supply and demand of health care jobs, as well as how higher education institutions are moving to accommodate industry employees and employers.

… The panelists include Laurie Chelsey, provost of Grand Rapids Community College, and Maria Cimitile, provost and executive vice president for academic and student affairs at Grand Valley State University. Jean Nagelkerk, GVSU vice provost for health, will serve as moderator.

Harbin joins women’s basketball staff

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. — Niagara University women’s basketball head coach Jada Pierce announced the hiring of Lester Harbin as an assistant coach. Harbin brings over 10 years of NCAA coaching experience on the men’s and women’s sides.

… Harbin played at Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Mich. from 1997-99, where he led the team in blocked shots, rebounds and field goal percentage. He then played one season (1999-2000) at the University of North Alabama and played his final year (2003-04) at Lees-McRae College.

Jayhawks volleyball squad improves to 9-1 in league play, defeats Lansing Community College

The Muskegon Community College volleyball squad defeated Lansing Community College 3-0 on Thursday.

… MCC is now 11-13 on the season and 9-1 in league play, good for second place behind unbeaten Grand Rapids Community College.

GRCC students who participated in the summer MICUP program at Michigan Technological University, UROP at the University of Michigan, and the Study Away trip to Salamanca, Spain, will exhibit their research from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 25, in the Raider Grille.

Accounting careers topic of Business Cafe session
