Native American Student Organization takes part in Ghost Supper

The Native American Student Organization (NASO) participated in a traditional Ghost Supper on Tuesday, Nov. 21, partnering with the Nattowaseppi Heron Band of Potawatomi Indians (NHBP) and the Anishinabee Circle. They had a Traditional Teaching by Jonathan Rinehart on Ghost Supper’s history and significance. NHBP’s Drum Circle played several songs and joined the NASO members and their families for supper.

Construction Begun On WMU’s Grand Rapids Manufacturing Lab

GRAND RAPIDS — Construction has begun at Western Michigan University’s Grand Rapids regional location for a state-of the-art manufacturing laboratory.

AMP Lab @WMU, an Advanced Manufacturing Partnership Laboratory, will be built in collaboration with West Michigan manufacturers and Grand Rapids Community College to address the shortage of skilled trades and engineering employees in the region. The Lab will occupy the first two floors of WMU’s downtown Grand Rapids location, which is located on Cherry and Ionia in the city’s Arena District.

Gov. Rick Snyder makes reappointments to the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the reappointments of Juan Marinez of Okemos, Carlos Pava of Grand Rapids, Ivonne Soler of Livonia, and Jesse Venegas of Royal Oak to the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan.

… Pava is the COO and co-founder of Voices for Health, Inc. He is a licensed trainer for the Community Interpreter International and a certified healthcare interpreter. Pava holds an associate degree from Grand Rapids Community College and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and business administration from Michigan State University.

Coldwater places four on Interstate 8 All-Conference volleyball team

COLDWATER — The Coldwater Lady Cardinal volleyball team had one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2017, putting together an astonishing record of 43-6-3 for the year.

… Both Jamie and Jasmine (Wellet) will continue their volleyball and academic careers at Grand Rapids Community College next year.

 

Angela and Erasmo Salinas welcome baby Alexa

Angela Salinas, from Admissions, and her husband Erasmo “Mo,” a GRCC adjunct,  welcomed a new baby girl into their family. Alexa Cecilia arrived on November 18 at 3:10 a.m., measuring 7 pounds and 3 ounces, and 20 inches long. Big sister Aurora, age 4, proudly welcomed her little sibling with lots of hugs and smiles. Mom and Dad are excited, proud, blessed, and tired.

Students can participate in #GivingTuesday too!

Stop by the first-floor Student Center on Tuesday, November 28, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and visit with our Student Alumni Philanthropy Club. They will be hosting a table and taking monetary donations for #GivingTuesday, as well as food donations for the GRCC Student Food Pantry. Anyone who gives a donation can enjoy our hot chocolate bar and be entered to win four tickets to GR Drive basketball game on Friday, December 8, which also happens to be GRCC Night! This event will end our GRCC student club food drive competition, where clubs have donated almost 300 pounds of food to our GRCC Student Food Pantry since November 6! Come support our students’ efforts in giving back!
