Announcing 32nd Annual MLK Day Community Celebration

The 32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Jan. 15 will honor the life and legacy of King with a community celebration that features Keynote Speaker April Reign, creator of the viral hashtag #OscarsSoWhite, and the premiere of the opera “I DREAM” at Fountain Street Church.

The celebration is open to the public and is hosted in collaboration with Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Davenport University and Opera Grand Rapids.

Jamieson Resigns As Furman Head Softball Coach; King Named Interim Coach For 2018 Season

Greenville, S.C. — Wally King has been named interim head coach for the Furman softball program after the resignation of Kyle Jamieson, who has accepted the position of associate head coach at Clemson, it was announced on Monday by Paladin director of athletics Mike Buddie.

… A National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) member, King began his coaching career on the collegiate level at Grand Rapids Community College as the assistant softball coach and head recruiter. During his three seasons with GRCC, he helped develop the program into a national title contender with back-to-back World Series appearances.

Honors Program students volunteer at Comprenew

On Saturday, December 2, 2017, Honors students served at Comprenew, where they learned about the impacts of recycling electronics and overall technology stewardship. Special thanks to professor Melanie Schiele-Gady in guiding our pre- and post-reflections. Did you know Comprenew is the only nonprofit organization in Michigan that collects outdated electronics and holds the most certifications to ensure proper disposal of harmful chemicals and overall data security?

Alejandro Saldivar to present Mathematics Seminar

The Grand Rapids Community College Mathematics Department is pleased to announce that it will host its final Mathematics Seminar of 2017 on Wednesday, December 6, 3:00-4:00 PM in 103 Cook.

Our speaker, GRCC Mathematics Instructor Alejandro Saldivar, will discuss a seemingly simple topic from geometry that leads to intriguing examples and unexpected consequences. For the title and abstract of Alejandro’s talk, please see below.

This presentation will appeal to a wide range of students and faculty; no previous mathematics background is required. All are welcome!

Reassembling Pieces of a Figure to Form Other Ones

Given two figures with the same area, can we always cut one into pieces so the pieces can be reassembled to form the second figure?  We investigate this question and provide some very interesting examples. This talk is suitable for an audience with a wide range of math backgrounds.
