Kent City High School sophomores visit GRCC

On Wednesday, December 6, the Admissions Office hosted the entire sophomore class from Kent City High School on our campus. Their day included an admissions presentation, a culinary tour and time with staff from both Manufacturing and Mechanical and Architectural Design. Their visit concluded with lunch and information on our athletic program and a tour of the Ford Fieldhouse. The Admissions Office would like to thank the departmental staff who engaged with these students!

A Grand Rapids Community College analysis concludes it adds $413.5 million to the Kent County economy and $34.2 million to Ottawa County’s economy. EMSI, a provider of economic impact studies and labor market data, looked at GRCC’s economic impact through its students, employees and alumni.

GVSU receives $1 million grant for STEM scholarships

Grand Valley State University has received a $1 million grant National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program to form a financial help program for low-income science and engineering students.

… Additionally, the project team will enlist area community colleges, including Grand Rapids Community College, Northwestern Michigan College, and Muskegon Community College, to help identify potential RISE scholars at their institutions and provide mentoring for those students before they enroll at Grand Valley.

GVSU announces speakers for 2018 MLK week

Each January, members of the Grand Valley State University community attend events for Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week, a celebration of the life of King and his work in the civil rights movement. The keynote speakers for January 2018 are April Reign and Bree Newsome, both of whom made waves in 2015 for their efforts to initiate social change.

Bobby Springer, director of the new Pathways to College Office at GVSU, has been working closely with Grand Rapids Community College and Davenport University to host these speakers. According to Springer, Reign and Newsome are in high demand across the country. Newsome first caught his attention two years ago when she made national headlines after climbing to the top of a flagpole to remove a Confederate flag in Columbia, South Carolina.

IT Support Desk holiday hours

The IT Support Desk will be available for phone and walk-in support Friday, December 15, through Friday, December 22, from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. We will maintain normal weekend phone hours on December 16 and 17, from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Upon return from the winter break, we will be open from 7:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. on January 3-5.

College Channel programming through Dec. 15

The latest schedule, through Dec. 15, for the College Channel includes a Ferris State University sports update.

Vending machines being prepared for holiday shutdown

As has been the case for the past several years, we are entering the time of year when we are preparing our vending equipment for the annual holiday shutdown. Our suppliers will begin to pull down stock, particularly with respect to dated items in the equipment, so that nothing is lost when we shut down the power to save energy. This may result in spot shortages in some locations on campus as we near Dec. 22.  We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Raider Salute for Jason Natte

The Library & Learning Commons offers a Raider Salute to custodian Jason Natte. Jason, in addition to his regular set-up, tear-down, and clean-up duties, helped us decorate for our recent Learning Center Open House. He has “ladder skills” and hung lots, and lots, and lots of snowflakes from our ceiling panels. We salute you!

Campus Dining hours for Exam Week

Exam Week December 11th – December 15th

• Raider Grille closed all week.
• Monday 11th — Quiet Café and Sneden Cafe normal hours with breakfast in Quiet Café 7am-10am.
• Tuesday 12th — Quiet Café 7am-4pm with breakfast 7am-10am; Sneden Café normal hours.
• Wednesday 13th — Quiet Café 7am-1pm (limited menu option); Sneden Café closed.
• Thursday 14th and Friday 15th — All retail operations closed.
• Re-opening on January 8th, 2018.

Donations for veterans due by December 14

The APSS employee group and the Campus Police will be collecting donations of new items for the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, from Oct. 16 to Dec. 14 for the holiday season.

Items needed:

• Gift cards or certificates to fast food restaurants (McDonald’s, Burger King, etc.)
• Small lap blankets
• 100-piece puzzles
• Stationery sets
• Personal toiletries:  toothbrushes, soap, body wash,
• mouthwash, deodorant, cologne for men or women

Donations will be accepted at the following locations:
