Condolences to friends, family of Gordy Hunsberger

GRCC extends its condolences to the family and friends of former Grand Rapids Junior College football coach and athletic director Gordon “Gordy” Hunsberger, who died Jan. 1.

Hunsberger , a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame, led the GRJC football team to its 1968 victory in the Wool Bowl. In 1987, he received Emeritus Faculty status, and the  Gordon Hunsberger Scholarship is also named for him. In 2011, Ford Fieldhouse’s arena underwent $1.1 million in renovations, assisted by a substantial gift from the David and Carol Van Andel Foundation. The Van Andels asked that the arena be named for Hunsberger.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 5 at Second Congregational Church, 525 Cheshire Drive NE. Visitation is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. today at Reyers North Valley Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave. NE, and from 10-11 a.m. Jan. 5 at Second Congregational Church.
