Fraternity helps black male students succeed

After Jesse William Krewson Jr. got back from Afghanistan, he wanted to get an education in an effort to better help people.

But when the Grand Rapids Community College student would do homework, he would just get stuck and felt like he had a lack of resources.

Change Ups: Clark is electrical craft competition’s top finisher

Calvin Clark is the top finisher for the first annual ABC WMC Electrical Craft Competition. The competition was hosted by the Associated Builders & Contractors, Western Michigan Chapter, which partnered with Grand Rapids Community College to showcase the skills of six top electrical apprentices from ABC WMC member companies who are enrolled in the GRCC apprenticeship program. Clark from HighPoint Electric now qualifies to represent ABC WMC and GRCC at the ABC National Craft Championship, scheduled March 20-22, in Long Beach, California.

QPR-Question. Persuade. Refer. Training

QPR is used to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. It is believed that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer – the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers can be anyone, but include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide.

 

The Ideal Team Player Workshop

GRCC Purchasing Policy Workshop

The Purchasing Department at GRCC serves the needs of the college for all purchases in excess of $1000. Responsibility and authority to make commitments for these purchases are assigned to the Purchasing Department. Melissa Davis, Procurement Specialist, will present the college’s Purchasing Policy, and provide a forum for open discussion and Q & A with participants.

The latest schedule, through March 2, for the College Channel includes the Feb. 19 Board of Trustees meeting.

ATC Tutorial and Open Computer Lab to accommodate students with laptops

The ATC Tutorial and Open Computer Lab is making room for student with laptops!

Starting March 12, students will be able to work in the lab and get help tutoring while using their laptops. There will be approximately 20 desks and 3 high top tables, both areas with electricity that seat two individuals to plug in their laptops. Students will also be able to sit along the window in five soft seating areas to accommodate battery-operated laptops.

Volunteers needed for Latino Youth Conference on March 6

Good afternoon!

The 19th Annual Latino Youth Conference at Grand Rapids Community College on March 6th, 2018, is quickly approaching!

The goal of the Latino Youth Conference (LYC) is to develop and empower youth leadership in the community; strengthen the sense of community among Latino youth in West Michigan; bring youth leaders of the community together to create better crossroads of understanding and connections; and create meaningful connections between area youth and adults.

Theme: El Poder de Soñar – The Power of Dreams

Artwork has been selected, breakout sessions are scheduled, and we need your help in the following areas:

Greeting students and staff upon arrival

Assisting school counselors

Escorting student groups to assigned breakout sessions

Assisting during breakfast and lunch

Monitoring buildings (hallways, bathrooms, vendor tables)

To make this event run smoothly, we depend on our volunteers. We would love your support this year to help ensure that this year’s conference is a success. Please forward this request to others who may be interested in helping.

Latino Youth Conference: Tuesday, March 6th, 7:30 a.m.* – 2:00 p.m. at GRCC Ford Fieldhouse. *The program starts at 9 a.m., but volunteers are needed prior to the start of the conference.

Volunteer Orientation:  Monday, March 5th, 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at GRCC Ford Fieldhouse, Room 212. Lunch or dinner will be provided.
