Witnesses say mutual fight led to man’s death; mother in doubt

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After almost a year of investigation, police and prosecutors found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing in the April 2017 death of a 25-year-old Grand Rapids man.

… (Julius Melvin) Vinson’s family described the 25-year-old as a “jokester” who was well-loved by his family and others. He studied business at Grand Rapids Community College, and wanted to be a real estate agent.

He finished his career as a two-time All-City player and an honorable mention All-State selection. Davis played his freshman year at Grand Rapids Community College.

… He (Juan Olivarez) served as the seventh president of Aquinas College from 2011 to 2017 and eighth president of Grand Rapids Community College from 1999 to 2008. In addition, he was a GRCC dean for 20 years; president and CEO of the Kalamazoo Community Foundation for three years; and a teacher, school psychologist and administrator with the Grand Rapids Public Schools system for many years.

Kent County considers early childhood tax for November ballot

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Early childhood education advocates in Kent County are once again working to place a county tax millage request on the ballot.

… There are also additional millages levied by the Kent Intermediate School District, Grand Rapids Community College, Kent District Library and the Inter Urban Transit Partnership — better known as The Rapid — and by local school districts and local units of government.

United Way basketball challenge is today; treats available for $1 donation

Think you can best Dr. Pink at basketball? Donate $5 and square off against our president in a variety of short competitions — most consecutive free throws, most consecutive layups, or P-I-G. The competition will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. TODAY  in the Fieldhouse.

Candy, sports drinks and popcorn will be available for a $1 donation to the United Way.

Surplus blowout sale will be held March 30

A GRCC surplus blowout sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 30 in room 108 of Sneden.

You’ll find desktop and all-in-one computers substantially discounted as well as laptops and lost-and-found items. Cash, checks and credit cards (Mastercard and Visa) will be accepted. GRCC students will receive a 25 percent discount by showing their RaiderCard.

All items are sold “as is” and all sales are final. You must take your items at the time of purchase.

SCHOLARfest to honor alumna Sara Smolenski

This year’s SCHOLARfest — 6-9 p.m. March 27 at DeVos Place — will honor Judge Sara J. Smolenski.

While a Grand Rapids Junior College student, Judge Smolenski was a leader in the classroom, on the softball field and on the basketball court. Now a leader in the courtroom and the community, she has actively supported the Grand Rapids Community Foundation in its mission to help students achieve their dreams.

The event includes a strolling dinner, music by Yellow Brick Dueling Pianos and a brief program at 6:45 p.m. Dress is business casual.

Individual tickets cost $150, with proceeds benefiting GRCC scholarships. You can RSVP online.
