Grand Rapids Community College has teamed up with local municipalities on a Public Works Academy that will give people in-demand skills and guaranteed interviews for open jobs.

Mich. Students Petition for Emergency Phones on Campus

Nearly 500 students at Grand Valley State University have signed an online petition to have the university install emergency blue light telephones around campus. The telephones, which are on poles with a blue light, would allow students to call 911 in the event of an incident requiring first responders.

… The costs for these blue light phones can range anywhere from $1,000 on Central Michigan University’s campus to $7,000 at Grand Rapids Community College. DeHaan said with GVSU campuses in Allendale, Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon, Detroit and Traverse City, there would be a significant cost to installing and maintaining a blue light phone at GVSU. He also said he’s seen blue light phones are not always the most effective strategy to keep students safe.
