Contractors earn national awards

Two West Michigan construction firms were honored for their work at a national awards ceremony.

… Rockford’s (Rockford Construction) work on the Grand Rapids Community College Laboratory Preschool earned it the National Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award. The award honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects.

College’s Latino business center wins grant

A local foundation has donated a three-year grant valued at $150,000 to a university’s Latino business center.

… “The Grand Rapids Community Foundation grant will help fund programs that equip young Latino professionals with the skills, resources, and confidence needed to become leaders at work and in their own communities,” said Carlos Sanchez, the center’s (Latino Business and Economic Development Center) director and a foundation board member. “Our Latino entrepreneurs will be more prepared to launch and expand successful businesses and empowered to take ownership of their future.”

(This article doesn’t mention it, but Carlos Sanchez is a member of the GRCC board of trustees.)

David Cope to read from newest book

Grand Rapids Poet Laureate Emeritus David Cope will read from his new book, The Invisible Keys: New and Selected Poems, and from poetry he’s written throughout his career during a special event on April 12.

A long-time GRCC English professor, Cope sparked the poetic imaginations of many of his students. He also served as editor of GRCC’s Display Magazine for many years.

Copies of Cope’s book, published by Ghost Pony Press, will be for sale at $16 during the event, which runs from 7-8:30 p.m. on the GRCC library’s second floor. Refreshments will be served during the reading, which is sponsored by the library and the English Department.

Registration now open for summer Online and Hybrid Certification Course

We only offer one session of the Online and Hybrid Certification Course during the summer, and it is done before the 4th of July. Sign up today!

The OHCC is designed to provide instructors with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver a high-quality online/hybrid course. Successful participants will also be able to teach effectively online through active facilitation and a variety of student engagement techniques and technologies. Training in Blackboard Basics (on the latest version of the LMS) is a prerequisite. Blackboard Basics may be taken online in a self-paced format or in-person on Friday, May 11th from 10:30 am-noon. 

The OHCC is a six (6) week, rigorous course that includes weekly participation and assignment requirements. This training is much more than “Blackboard training,” as it includes elements of instructional design and strategies for building, developing, sequencing, and delivering online content. When you are done, you will have a template for your online and/or hybrid course. You must complete the course, including the assignments for all six weeks, for certification. This includes the completion of your final presentation.

Participants will:

  • Attend the Friday session if they do not complete the previous week’s assignments.
  • Watch a Relay recording if they do not attend the campus session.
  • Complete all online assignments (e.g. reading, discussions, learning activities).
  • Post content to an empty/template course in Blackboard.
  • Complete assessments or self-assessments.
  • Make a final presentation and submit a course evaluation.

The campus sessions are on Fridays from 1:00-2:30 pm in 351 Main and virtually using Zoom. This is a hybrid course (online course with some classroom instruction). However, you are not required to attend these Friday sessions if the previous week’s work is completed. Those who do not attend will watch a video of the campus session.
