Collegiate wins 6 awards at MPA gala

The Collegiate won six awards at the 2018 Michigan Press Association Convention and Gala last week.

The following GRCC students were recognized for their work:

• Kayla Tucker, Second Place Feature Story, Home is here: A GRCC student’s story of immigration
• Kayla Tucker, Second Place Investigative Reporting, Trustee comments concern leaders across GRCC campus
• Nate Bidwell, Third Place News-Only Photo, Anti-Trump protesters take to the streets in Grand Rapids
• Jaimason Thomas, Honorable Mention Sports News/Features, Brett Slayton: Lacing up and living the dream
• Avery Jennings, Third Place Sports Photo, Freshman Outside hitter, Lena Thompson, jumps to spike the ball for a kill
• Joanna Barcelo, Second Place Original Cartoon Editorial or Entertainment, Editorial Cartoon: 15th Anniversary of 9/11

MeXo highlights Mesoamerican cuisine with bold flavors and bright colors

If you think you know Mexican food, think again. MeXo brings pre-Hispanic, Mesoamerican cuisine (think before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors to Mexico) to Grand Rapids in a way that still says 2018.
… Chef Oscar (Moreno) has been tapped by the both Grand Rapids Community College and the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to mentor young (and aspiring) Latino chefs, so we’re sure to see much more to come from his involvement and his kitchen.

Tour historic Heritage Hills homes this weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Heritage Hills Neighborhood Weekend Tour of Homes kicks off Saturday, May 19 and runs through Sunday, May 20.
… Tickets are $25 the weekend of the tour and can be bought at Grand Rapids Community College’s DeVos Campus, located at 435 East Fulton Street. Advance tickets are $18 and can be bought at the following locations: Family Fare and D&W Food stores, Lake Michigan Credit Unions, Martha’s Vineyard, Art of the Table, the Heritage Hill Association and online.
