Colleges, nonprofit work to increase diversity in health care workforce

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Grand Rapids African American Health Institute (GRAAHI) and seven West Michigan colleges are partnering to increase diversity in the health care workforce by reducing barriers to minority students seeking educational opportunities.

… The higher education institutions involved in the initiative include: Grand Valley State, Davenport and Ferris State universities, Aquinas College, Calvin College, Grand Rapids Community College, and Hope College.

Former inmates will get job training under $1.5M grant program

Former jail and prison inmates returning to Grand Rapids will receive job training through a $1.5 million federal grant awarded to Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids.

… Goodwill provides some job training itself, but also partners with community organizations, such as Grand Rapids Community College and trade unions.

Spectrum Theater becomes accessible to hearing impaired

In celebration of its newly installed hearing loop system, Spectrum Theater at Grand Rapids Community College is offering a free performance of “Snow White, the Queen’s Fair Daughter” for deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their parents, teachers and friends.

GRCC nursing faculty exposing Boys & Girls Clubs teens to career

As Baby Boomers age and the overall need for health care continues to grow, the demand for nurses and other in-demand health care careers will continue increases, officials say.

GRCC’s nursing instructors and students will lead three summer workshops for high schoolers in the club’s Career Pathways Program.

Juan Mascorro-Guerrero and Gloire Rubambiza found their way to Grand Valley from Mexico and Uganda, respectively.

… Mascorro-Guerrero graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School and then enrolled at Grand Rapids Community College, under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. At one point, he was working three jobs to pay off his college debt.

GRPD to hold first two ‘Speed of Trust’ events Wednesday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Police Department will hold the first sessions of a community trust building initiative Wednesday, June 27.

“Speed of Trust” will be at Grand Rapids Community College from 8 a.m. to noon. There is an alternate session from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Grand Rapids Community College trustees unanimously approved a $112.3-million budget for the 2018-19 academic year, a spending plan that includes the lowest tuition increase in nearly two decades.

Google today announced an IT professional certificate that will be available at Grand Rapids Community College. The certificate aims to train students with no prior experience to be IT support professionals in about eight months. Since its inception nearly five months ago, nearly 40,000 students have enrolled in the online program. Grand Rapids Community College President Bill Pink said the certificate will provide students with in-demand skills. IT support is one of the fastest growing fields in the nation with more than 150,000 open positions.

More colleges are going tobacco-free. The CDC says more than 2,000 colleges were smoke- or tobacco-free last year, up from about 800 in 2012. … Western Michigan and Grand Rapids Community College are both now tobacco free.

Going the Distance: A GRCC walking challenge

Going the Distance @ GRCC is a friendly walking competition that encourages faculty, staff, and students to band together to face off against other teams in the pursuit of garnering the most steps!

We’re promoting wellness, but also the opportunity to build relationships with our colleagues across campus and, especially, the students. This is an opportunity for them to get to know the GRCC family and our campus.

This short, four-week challenge begins July 9. So, go ahead, join the movement.

Restaurant Week is coming soon with something new

Restaurant Week Grand Rapids, (RWGR), announces a third Chef’s Choice option that will be available during the 12-day culinary event in the Greater Grand Rapids area from August 8 19, 2018.

… RWGR not only promotes the Greater Grand Rapids culinary scene, but also provides educational support through a scholarship fund for students at the Grand Rapids Community College Secchia Institute for Culinary Education. Since 2010, Restaurant Week participating restaurants and sponsors have contributed over $143,000 to the scholarship fund. Participating restaurants donate $1 for every Restaurant Week meal sold to the scholarship fund that is granted to selected students within the Institute’s culinary program.

… The senior Grand Rapids Community College signee struck out 60 batters in 53 2/3 innings, while posting a 7-0 record, a 0.26 ERA and allowing 30 hits, nine walks and two earned runs.

The senior Grand Rapids Community College signee earned first team all-conference and first team all-district honors after batting .426 with a .535 on-base percentage, while throwing out 36 percent of runners from behind the plate.

Architecture projects win statewide awards

A group of local firms and projects recently won statewide awards from an association of architects.

… AIA Michigan also presented the Design Award to two Grand Rapids projects: Phyllis Fratzke Early Childhood Learning Laboratory at Grand Rapids Community College won in the building category, and the Ford airport Viewing Pavilion won in the low budget/small project category.

Mike Rose was an All-American tennis player at Aquinas College, but not all of his favorite memories from those days were made on the courts.
… (Jerry) Hendrick has been part of the West Michigan tennis community since he was a child. He played at Creston High School before graduating in 1982, and he got his first coaching opportunity when he was attending Grand Rapids Community College. Creston girls coach Jerry Bentley invited Hendrick to return to his alma mater and serve as an assistant.
