Viceroy Butterflies

An orange butterfly we recently saw in the distance looked like a monarch-but might actually have been a viceroy. To definitively distinguish the look-alikes, you have to get close enough to check for a black ribbon band running across the hind wings: viceroys have them, monarchs don’t. Our images this month include both viceroys and monarchs for a side-by-side, top-and-bottom comparison. For a more distant clue, observe the flight patterns. The monarch’s is more of a flap, flap, and glide; the viceroy is more frenetic in its movements.
… Matthew Douglas, a butterfly expert who teaches at Grand Rapids Community College and Michigan State University, enthusiastically told a further tale of co-mimicry. When the viceroy is found in Florida and other southern states, it looks more like a queen-a southern butterfly that also resembles a monarch but is much darker. In states where queens are present, viceroys are darker, too. Birds beware: all orange butterflies taste bad.

West Michigan chefs tour cage-free egg farm

More than 40 chefs from Zeeland-based Creative Dining Services recently toured Vande Bunte Egg Farms cage-free campus as part of their Chef Lab program. The behind-the-scenes tour gave the chefs a first-hand look at where and how the eggs they use in their kitchens are produced, as Creative Dining is committed to using eggs from cage-free farms by the end of 2018.
… Creative Dining, a hospitality management provider, operates food service programs for clients in 12 states. Some of the Michigan facilities include Davenport University, Calvin College, Samaritas, Grand Rapids Community College, Hope College, Stryker and Kalamazoo College.

College Channel programming through August 3rd

The latest schedule, through August 3,  is now available online.

Staff loaner laptops available at IT Support

Loaner laptops are now available for check out through the IT Support Desk at our G2 office in room 76 Main Building and in 130 Sneden. Laptop loaners will no longer be available through the Media Department.

Laptops may be checked out on a short term basis for up to 10 business days. Long term loaners may be requested, but faculty and staff will need to complete a justification form. Requests may be made in person or ahead of time through our Service Request portal (available on campus only with your Campus Network credentials).

As a reminder to faculty and staff who may be traveling abroad; the use of your assigned college owned laptop is not recommended due to security concerns. If you are traveling abroad, please check out a loaner laptop.
