… At Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana, John Cowles will serve as vice chancellor for student success for its Indianapolis campus, as of September 17. Kevin Keathley will serve as dean of information technology at the Indianapolis campus, effective September 3. Cowles has served as dean of student success and retention for Grand Rapids Community College (Michigan) since 2013. Keathley is currently director of cloud delivery at Ontario Systems in Indiana.

Putting Input Into Action sessions to be held

Human Resources is following up on the Opening Day presentation of the PACE (Personal Assessment of the College Environment) survey results. As we’ve done in past years, we are offering “Putting Input Into Action” sessions for employees to learn more about the results and to talk about what improvement looks like. We hope to see you at one of our sessions where you can take advantage of the opportunity to engage in the discussions around improvement.

  • Tuesday, October 23, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

CAB Welcomes Back Fall Students With Brown Bag Breakfasts

GRCC Campus Activities Board sponsored Raider Welcome, a morning snack offering to students on their first day of classes. CAB members and volunteers packed over 1,000 brown bag breakfasts. 500 bags were handed out at Main campus, 300 at DeVos Campus, and 200 at the Tassell M-TEC. The Lakeshore Campus also handed out baggies at Midtown and the Thompson M-TEC.

CAB would like to thank everyone for their willingness to volunteer and welcome our students back to campus!

Fall Wellness Schedule Out Now!

**Note: Friday Yoga has moved to Room 140 SCIE**

Classes are now in session, and so are our fall wellness classes! Build a little “YOU” time into your busy days and join us. We have a class for everyone, from beginners to advanced. Check out the schedule, grab a friend, and come move your body!

As always, there’s no need to sign up in advance – just show up and see what the fun is all about. You are welcome to bring your spouse, child over 18, or friend(s) to these classes. Non-GRCC participants are asked to pay a small $20 fee per semester. All are welcome!

Wellness classes will not be held on September 3rd or the week of November 19-23 in observance of holidays.

Expect a traffic jam on Division Avenue this morning as students begin classes at Grand Rapids Community College. Fountain Street is closed east of Division, the usual route to get to the main GRCC parking ramp. Expect cars to be lined up on Division, Library Street and Library Place.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – We all know how busy and congested the Michigan Street corridor is — which is why Grand Rapids city leaders kicked off a three-year pilot program in hopes of helping alleviate traffic and parking issues along of the city’s most traveled routes.
… The route includes stops near Spectrum Health, Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, Meijers soon-to-open Bridge Street Market and more than 50 additional popular, high-traffic destinations. Many of these businesses will offer special deals and discounts to patrons who simply mention the Route 19 Discount while at the establishment through Sept. 23. Learn more about deals here.

Rapid bus service launches free rides on Michigan Street corridor

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — In an effort to reduce traffic and ease parking congestion, the Rapid public-transit system is now offering free rides on a bus route along the Michigan Street corridor.
… It has stops near Spectrum Health, Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Community College, Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine and Bridge Street Market, which opens Wednesday. Spectrum is encouraging employees to use the service when traveling between the health care system’s various buildings for meetings.

This year’s Opening Day ceremony was held at St. Cecilia’s and included wonderful coffee and breakfast from our culinary department, college updates, points of pride, video introductions to the GRCC Night Staff,  PACE survey results from Donna Kragt, and GRCC’s 2018 Excellence in Education Award winners.

Brian Daily, coordinator of the Business Tutorial Lab, received the faculty award; Julie Spahn, an instructor in the English Department, was honored with the adjunct award; and JaneAnn Benson, director of the Phyllis Fratzke Childhood Learning Laboratory, received the staff award.

The Communications Department is putting together a list of faculty experts on subject areas that might be of interest to our local media. At various times, reporters contact us for expert commentary on a variety of subjects: politics, health care, the arts, etc. If you have an expertise that you’d be willing to share with the public, please send an email to lchesley@grcc.edu, and she will compile a list for Communications to use when they are contacted.

Our area welcomed the Grand Rapids Community College volleyball team Saturday night after they were in Honolulu for games against teams from across the country. The coach told us he’s impressed about how his players became leaders. The Raiders actually open up the regular season of play with a match against Glen Oaks Community College tomorrow night.
