“I’m a first-generation student who started college at age 28. I was a high school drop-out. I still struggle with poverty, no family support, and multiple disabilities, including Learning Disabilities. Despite all that, I have managed to further myself with hard work, integrity, and the help of institutions like GRCC and GVSU. I want to advocate for others, which is why being a Social Worker is important to me, along with being a visible trans man.

AWARDED: $1500
“When first attending college over 20 years ago, I was overwhelmed, intimidated, and unprepared. I dropped out before completing. Six years ago, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. That explained a lot and I felt that I didn’t have to try as hard to conform. I began volunteering and started to learn about the world around me. When I realized I was transgender, I found that piece of myself that had been missing, that was holding me back from succeeding.

Raider Salute to Bayard Brooks and Luba Petrash for MACET

August 7, 2018

A special thank you to Bayard Brooks and Luba Petrash at the ATC for their work last week on the Michigan Association for Continuing Education and Training (MACET).

The conference – moving between several rooms and audio/visual setups – was flawlessly executed by Bayard.  Many speakers mentioned how easy and painless it was at GRCC, especially compared to other venues.  We received compliments from every person on the excellent food during the conference.  We are so very fortunate to have Bayard and Luba making GRCC look great!  Thank you from MACET and the Workforce Training Team.

Campus Artwork available today through Thursday!

August 7, 2018

We’ve taken all the artwork out of storage and have been working to identify the pieces that you’ll begin to see being installed and displayed in public spaces around campus.  We’ve also identified LOTS of pieces that we want to make available to the campus community for use in departments and individual offices.  There are pieces by students, faculty, and others.  We’re going to make these pieces available on a first come basis.  Nick Antonakis will be on site to help answer questions about the pieces.

If you’re interested in artwork for your area, you may come look at the art and make selections today, tomorrow, and Thursday, August 7-9, in Main 461 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
