Parents, community leaders excited about possible free college tuition

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Parents dropping off their children at Grand Rapids Public Schools Wednesday, Sept. 5, expressed excitement and relief about the Michigan Promise Zone designation and the potential for free college tuition.
… Grand Rapids Community College President Bill Pink said the scholarship program has the potential to be a game-changer for the community because it will be a game-changer for students.
“This takes one of the barriers off the table for students wanting to pursue a college degree or other higher education credential,” he said. “The opportunity that will be there will be tremendous.”

Bicyclist hospitalized after being hit by vehicle in GR

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A bicyclist was hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday while going through a crosswalk in Grand Rapids.
… A Grand Rapids Community College police officer said the bicyclist suffered back, neck and facial injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injuries weren’t considered to be life-threatening.

Greenville to induct two athletes and one team

GREENVILLE — The Greenville High School Hall of Fame Class of 2018 include two athletes and a team, which will be honored during halftime of Friday’s football game between the Yellow Jackets and the Lowell Red Arrows.
… He (Tom Hallock) transferred to Grand Rapids Community College and then to the University of South Alabama, where he finished his collegiate baseball career and earned a degree in business administration. He then returned to Ferris State to earn his teaching degree, minoring in social studies.

GRCC Tree in the Running to be 2018 Mayor’s Tree of the Year

The Hackberry tree at the Phyllis Fratzke Early Childhood Learning Laboratory playground is in the running to be the 2018 Mayor’s Tree of the Year! There are five trees in the running. The photo that has the most likes by 5 p.m. on Friday, September 7th, will be the winner.

People can vote for GRCC’s tree by logging onto their Facebook accounts and “liking” the tree – it is the same image as the photo above.

An excerpt from the voting page for our tree: “This Hackberry tree has become a symbol of survival and strength for all people connected with the newly built Phyllis Fratzke Early Childhood Learning Laboratory on the campus of Grand Rapids Community College… The Hackberry has become the focal point of their nature based playground plan from a design aspect and from its usefulness in children’s play. The center hopes to enjoy many more decades in the shade of this tree!”

Transfer Fair Today in the Student Plaza

The Academic Advising & Transfer Center holds an annual College Transfer Fair in the fall semester.  This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the transfer schools they intend to transfer to or help students find a transfer school.  You can pick up catalogs, applications, and information about scholarships.  We have invited over 40 schools to participate in the event.
