Western Michigan University is opening a new lab for manufacturing students. … Just a year ago, the university announced a collaboration with Grand Rapids Community College and West Michigan manufacturers addressing industry needs. The facility will include opportunities for students to earn college credits in prototyping, training and small-scale manufacturing. Bill Pink, GRCC president: “This is a collaboration of people and organizations that got together and said, ‘We need to do more in the area of advancing manufacturing in West Michigan because we all know that the need is hugs and it’s not going away tomorrow.'”

COLDWATER — Paul Tower of Coldwater is an artist under the disguise of a flooring guy, the owner of H & S Supply.
… It’s a sculpture, “Ferocious Funnel” on display at the Grand Rapids Community College Spectrum Theater lobby. Tower was elated when he learned the piece was accepted. He had entered in the past without success.

Congratulations to Lorena Aguayo-Marquez, a recipient of the 2018 Helen Jackson Claytor Civil Rights Award!

She will receive the award tonight from the Grand Rapids Community Relations Commission. Also receiving the award is Elias Lumpkins, a former 3rd Ward city commissioner, former dean of students at Grand Rapids Junior College, and member of the GRCC Foundation board.

Aguayo-Marquez, now GRCC’s Kellogg community recruitment specialist, received an Excellence in Education Award and an ALAS Latinas Emerging Leader Award last year.

The Grand Rapids Community Relations Commission established the Helen Jackson Claytor Civil Rights Award in 1998. A statue of Claytor, the first African-American president of the national YWCA, stands on GRCC’s Dr. Juan R. Olivarez Student Plaza.
