In geology professor Tari Mattox’s classroom, a pen etches a pattern that shows what’s going on inside the Earth, deep beneath your feet. Usually it’s a slow and steady scribe, in constant motion, but sometimes it jumps with excitement.
… Mattox is a volcano expert who joined the Grand Rapids Community College staff in 2002 after a career that traversed the rocky world, from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, where she monitored the Kilauea volcano, to Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, where she dug deep for 3-billion-year-old nickel deposits.

Hernández named among top 50 Latinas in Michigan

MUSKEGON — Reeths-Puffer school board member and Montague High School graduate Sonya Hernández was named as one of the top 50 latinas in Michigan for 2018.
… Hernández is an educator, model, and community volunteer who lives in Muskegon. She works as an adjunct professor and a full time Assisting Latinos to Achieve and Succeed (ALAS) coordinator at Grand Rapids Community College.

Panther volleyball goes 2-2 in Illinois tourney

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Neosho County Lady Panthers volleyball team claimed a pair of victories over ranked teams at the Lincoln Land Community College invitational.
Grand Rapids Community College brought a 21-4 record into the first match of the tournament.

Restaurant hosting Hispanic awards gala

Course planner embeds new search tool

Responding to student demand for ways to reduce the cost of college, student success leader Civitas Learning today announced the launch of new search technology specifically designed to help students find courses that offer open educational resources (OER). This would allow students to reduce costs for required course materials while still accessing a complete educational experience.
… Prior to its wider launch, the OER search technology has been successfully piloted at institutions within the California State University system and Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan.

Reeths-Puffer football coach resigns, citing need for more family time

MUSKEGON, MI – When Kyle Jewett assembled his team for a high school football playoff selection-show watch party Sunday, deep down he was hoping that Reeths-Puffer could sneak into the postseason.
… Prior to becoming the head coach at Reeths-Puffer, Kyle Jewett served as an assistant at three different stops: Northview (2007), R-P (2008-2010) and Grand Rapids Community College (2011).
