Area athletes making an impact on the college level

GRAND RAPIDS – The fall sports season has ended the winter season its getting into full swing at colleges and universities around the region and numerous local athletes are making contributions on the collegiate level this season. Following is a look at former high school athletes from Caledonia, East Kentwood, Grand Rapids Catholic Central and South Christian that are competing at the college level.
… Sammie Ryans, an East Kentwood grad, is turning in a solid sophomore season with the Grand Rapids Community College men’s basketball team. Ryan is averaging 15.8 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.

From food industry burn-out to local smoke star

David Diephouse thought he was done with the food business.
A graduate of the culinary program at Grand Rapids Community College, Diephouse spent 16 years in the industry before burning out and quitting in 2000. He had been a line cook, a pastry chef and worked for a catering company, among a series of food-industry jobs.

MANKATO — Tony Annese spent 25 years coaching football at four high schools in Michigan and was successful enough to become a member of the state’s coaching Hall of Fame. In 2009, he was named as the coach at Grand Rapids Community College.

It was a milestone win for head coach Tony Annese — his 300th career win as a professional coach. He has already won three state titles at the high school level and led Grand Rapids Community College to two national junior high school titles.
