GRCC recruiting more minorities for health care fields

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Grand Rapids Community College has funding to train 60 people for an initiative to help increase the diversity of the health care workforce, according to Julie Parks, executive director of GRCC Workforce Training.

College creates supply chain program

A local college has created a new program to prepare students for supply chain management.

Grand Rapids Community College said last month it is now offering the 30-week program Supply Chain Operations Management Certificate to prepare people to manage the transport and storage of raw materials, inventory and finished goods from where they are made to where they are used.

A former first son will be in West Michigan today for a rededication ceremony. Grand Rapids Community College will celebrate the renovations at the Ford Fieldhouse. Mike Ford, President Gerald R. Ford’s son, will speak at the ceremony for the building named after his father. It will start at 3:30 today. GRCC spent $8 million on upgrades and new facilities for their student-athletes.

Days before the start of second semester, volleyball players Dani Johnston, Jamie Wellet and Jasmine Wellet, stopped in to see the newly renovated Ford Fieldhouse, which hosts the teams home games and other athletic events.

… Grand Rapids Community College officials say upgrading the fieldhouse, 111 Lyon St. NE, provides a state-of-the-art facility for athletes and students.

Henry Ford College President Russell Kavalhuna appointed to talent creation subcommittee

DEARBORN — Late last year, former Gov.  Snyder appointed Henry Ford College President Russell Kavalhuna to a two-year term on the state’s 21st Century Talent Creation Subcommittee.

… In addition to Kavalhuna, Snyder appointed Grand Rapids Community College President Dr. Bill Pink; Alpena Public Schools Supt. Dr. John VanWagoner; Dr. Joseph Lubig, associate dean of the School of Education at Northern Michigan University; Megan Schrauben, executive director of the MiSTEM Network for the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget; Alycia Meriweather, deputy superintendent of external partnerships, enrollment & specialty programming at the Detroit Public Schools Community District and Dr. Mark Pogliano, principal at the Jackson Area Career Center.

AED device in Calkins gets new location

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has been moved out of room 320 in Calkins Science to the hallway just outside of this same room. Please direct any questions to Lt. Decker, GRCC Campus Police.

Exercise is Medicine workshops look at lower back care, heart health

Students, staff and faculty are welcome at two free Exercise is Medicine workshops this semester:

“How to Take Care of Your Lower Back While Doing Physical Work”

When and where: 6-7 a.m. Jan. 29 at Ford Fieldhouse’s Fitness Center.

Presenters: Jodi Gee, Exercise Science professor, and Jim Van Dokkumberg, executive director of Facilities.

Description: In this session, you will learn exercises and techniques to use to strengthen, stretch and take care of your lower back and core while doing physical work. Towards the end of the session, we will demonstrate how to use some of the new equipment in our Fitness Center that will also help with core and low back help. Who needs to attend? Anyone who wants to learn about low back and core health!

“Heart Health: The Good, the Bad and the Down-Right Ugly Consequences of Not Loving Your Heart”

When and where: 10:15-11:15 a.m. FEb. 22 in room 123 of the Calkins Science Center.

Presenters: Leigh Kleinert, Biological Sciences professor, and Melanie Schiele Gady, Exercise Science professor.

Description: February is Heart Health Month, and we want to guide our participants on the importance of taking care of your heart as this is the No. 1 cause of death in our country and worldwide of men and women. We will learn about the heart and how it works, lifestyle choices we should be making or changing, what happens when you do not take care of your heart, and how to care for most common heart issues.
