Unique partnership leads to tuition-free college

LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Whitmer presented a budget that called for increased funding in education to help fill Michigan’s talent pipeline, with that call-to-action, the state is highlighting educational opportunities that prepare students to fill the skills gap and get a head start on their postsecondary education.
Launch U is a specialized early college program for eligible Kent ISD high school students, by extending school by one year they earn their diploma, a general associate degree or a specialty associate degree in Mechanical Design from Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC). Students also have the option to graduate with industry recognized certificates, without extending beyond their 12th grade.

…Laurie Chesley, provost and executive vice president for academic and student affairs at Grand Rapids Community College, will become president of Central Oregon Community College on July 1. She will succeed Shirley Metcalf, who plans to retire.

Ryan Brady Named Head Coach of SVSU Football Program

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Saginaw Valley State University Director of Athletics John Decker has announced that Ryan Brady has been named the seventh head coach of SVSU Football. Brady comes to Saginaw Valley after serving as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Ferris State University.
…Prior to Ferris State, Brady coached at Grand Rapids Community College from 2009-2011 as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The Raiders posted a 30-4 overall record in the three seasons and had the highest scoring offense in the nation all three years.

G Suite Transition: viewing a co-worker’s calendar

In GroupWise, viewing a specific coworker’s calendar is helpful when scheduling meetings or staffing. This can be done easily in Google Calendar, and most importantly, Google allows for custom color coding!

The simplest way to view someone’s availability in Google Calendar is to type their name into the “Add Calendar” area in the left menu above your calendars. This will add their calendar to your list of “other calendars” and allow you to see if they are free or busy.

The level of detail for what you will see when viewing someone’s calendar depends on the settings they have set for that particular calendar. The settings for your personal/default calendar are found under Access Permissions. The “Make available to public” option would make your calendar accessible to any user of Gmail. You will most likely want to avoid this option!

When selecting “Make available for Grand Rapids Community College,” you can choose between:

See only free/busy (hide details)
See all event details
Make changes to events
Make changes and manage sharing

This is up to your own discretion, and should be decided upon by the level of detail added in your calendar events. We advise that you only share your default calendar with select individuals or groups, under “Share with specific people.”

It is important to update your personal calendar with the details of when you’ll be out. Google Calendar has an Out of Office option when creating events, which will warn others that you’re not available if they try and invite you to an event during that time. Populating your default calendar will also allow your colleagues to busy search you, so don’t forget to keep this up to date!

Please Note: The G Suite pilot account is only for testing and training purposes. Any content migrated from GroupWise to pilot will not be automatically moved to the production G Suite environment.

Nominate deserving faculty and staff colleagues for the 2019 Excellence in Education Awards

Here at GRCC, we are truly fortunate to work with staff and faculty who go above and beyond their role at the college, in the community, or in higher education. These individuals make learning at GRCC a meaningful and impactful experience for our students and working at GRCC an honor and inspiration for fellow employees.

To recognize them, please consider nominating them for the Excellence in Education Award! The Excellence in Education Award was established in 1989 to honor an individual Grand Rapids Community College employee. In 2000, the award was expanded to provide recognition in the form of a staff award, and a separate full-time faculty award. In 2010, an additional award was added for an exemplary adjunct faculty member.

There is a cash award of $1,000 for full-time faculty who have taught at GRCC for at least 5 years, a $750 cash award for adjunct faculty who have taught at least 2 years, and staff members may also be nominated to receive a cash award of $1,000.

Reminder: next WW at work session begins April 4

On campus meetings begin Thursday April 4. The group meets once a week (Thursdays) from 12:30-1:15 p.m. in the FarSide Room (first floor, Student Center)

Cost is $132.60 for 12 weeks of on-campus meetings beginning Thursday, April 4. This joining fee also gives you access to the WW app which includes great resources and tools for independent tracking.
