Recreation program hires new director

The North Kent Community Enrichment Board of Trustees (formerly Cedar Springs Parks and Recreation) voted unanimously Tuesday evening, July 30, to hire Jaime Gunderson as their part-time new director.

… Gunderson holds a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation and a Master’s degree in Sports administration and events. She worked in Parks and Recreation for 1-1/2 years with the City of Walker and spent 10 years as Sports Director for Special Olympics. She is also an instructor at Grand Rapids Community College in the Exercise Science Department. She teaches recreation classes, camping and canoeing, CPR/First aid, swimming, and has also taught basketball and soccer.

The Sparta trio Jordan Ball, AJ Klein, and Garrett Cheslek all competed in their first season for the GRCC Raiders Baseball team. Jordan Ball made 36 starts this season recording a .312 batting average. A.J. Klein played in 10 games, 7 innings and recorded a 9.13 ERA. Pitcher Garrett Cheslek played in 11 games, 4 innings and recorded a 5.77 ERA. In addition to helping the Raiders excel on the field, Garrett Cheslek was named Academic All-Conference.

season for the GRCC Raiders softball team. This season Stearns played and started in 34 games for the Raiders, while recording a .259 batting average, hitting 7 doubles, 1 triple,  9 rbi. Marble played in all 41 games this season and made 39 starts for the Raiders this season while recording a .313 batting average, hitting 7 doubles and 7 homerooms, 34 RBI, and recording a .557 slug %. At the conclusion of the season, Marble was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. In addition to excelling on the field, both Marble and Stearns picked up academic accolades. Marble was named Academic All-Conference and Stearns was named academic All-MCCAA and academic All-Conference.

The East Kentwood Trio of Sammie Ryans, D’Avery Moore, and Cam Spicer competed this past season for the GRCC Raiders basketball team. The trio helped the Raiders to their first outright conference championship since 2001, and a Region runner-up finish. Sammie Ryans had a breakout season. Ryans was named a 3rd team NJCAA All-American, 1st team All-Conference, All-Region and All-MCCAA. He was the top scorer in the MCCAA, recording 612 points in 31 games. He was second in 3 pointers (106) and averaged 19.1 points per game. Ryans recently signed a national letter of intent to continue his career at Aquinas College. In addition to excelling on the court, Ryans excelled in the classroom as he was named Academic All-Conference and Academic All-MCCAA. Moore played in 27 games this season, averaging 7.7 points per game, Spicer played in 32 games this season, recording 8.6 points per game and 3.8 assists per game.
