Academic Support & Tutoring Services – Fall Tutor Training

The Academic Support and Tutoring Services department held its semi-annual Tutor Training on August 19 & 20.  Our Tutor Training is accredited by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and provides an important opportunity for our tutors to learn and refresh skills in assisting GRCC students across many different content areas.

The first day of training was for our new tutors and included such topics as Collaborative Learning Strategies, Case Studies in Campus Resources, and Common Tutoring Scenarios.  On the second day of training, we added our returning tutors to the group and provided sessions on Tutoring Adult Learners, Title IX updates, and a review of our CRLA Level 1 tutoring topics.  The afternoon concluded with content-specific training which ranges from participating in a guest speaker’s presentation on Gamification to learning how to use a new online scheduling tool.  Over the two days, tutors have an opportunity to interact with students and staff from across the College, and build relationships with their fellow tutors.

Van Marnius Swets Travel Award Recipient Michelle Allen

We’ve heard back from Michelle Allen, one of the recipients of this year’s Van Marnius Swets Travel Award:

Thank you for making the travel award available to GRCC staff!  My solo hiking trip to the Berkshires was spectacular. Binging on vistas, nature, yoga, and scones was the perfect way to get away and start my summer!

Thank you again for recognizing the importance of R&R!
