The Grand Rapids Promise Zone Authority to approve scholarship

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Promise Zone Authority is set to approve a scholarship for students living in Grand Rapids.

… The plan will give students starting with the class of 2020 the opportunity to earn a certificate or associates degree from Grand Rapids Community College tuition-free. The scholarship will also cover books, supplies and fees related to their classes.

Investigators: National interview of father facing charges ‘one-sided’

WEST OLIVE, Mich. (WOOD) — Investigators are reacting after a West Michigan man, who’s accused of manslaughter, called the charges against him “unfair” on national television.

Grand Rapids Community College professor Timothy Koets was charged in October after police say his son, Sam Koets, 16, drowned in the family’s pool after he was left unattended in March 2019.

Tim Johnson out as Comstock Park football coach

Comstock Park High School joins the list of Grand Rapids area schools searching for a new varsity football coach.

… (Tim) Johnson has coached baseball at Comstock Park for the past 33 seasons and was inducted into the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association in 2014. He was an assistant football coach at Comstock Park in the early 1980s under John Shillito in the early 1980s and again under Mark Chapman for four years before being named head coach. In addition, he was an assistant at Grand Valley for four seasons and Grand Rapids Community College for 23 years.

Ray having standout season at Mid Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT — Former Big Rapids standout athletic Kaitlyn Ray is getting the job done in an impressive way this season for Mid Michigan College’s nationally ranked and undefeated women’s basketball team.

… On Wednesday, in an 80-48 win over Grand Rapids Community College, Ray had 12 points with 4-of-8 shooting from the floor, and a triple and 3-of-3 from the line, plus 15 rebounds. After 12 games for her 12-0 team, she’s averaging 7.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game and is shooting 44 percent from the floor and 73.1 percent from the charity stripe.

Individual LaughFest tickets go on sale Friday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Individual tickets for the 10th annual Gilda’s LaughFest go on sale Friday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m.
