How you can help students with food, housing, funding insecurity

Hello, GRCC community!
On behalf of CAP 3.3, we would like to thank you for engaging in the conversation about student food, housing and funding insecuring during Learning Day. We hope you found Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab’s keynote engaging and insightful. The slides from Dr. Goldrick-Rab’s presentation can be found here.

Do GRCC students face some of the issues Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab spoke about?

YES! In the 2016 Wisconsin Hope Lab survey completed by 428 GRCC students we found the following:

  • 45% of GRCC students scored in “low security” or “very low security” for food

    • In the past 30 days, they met two of the following: couldn’t afford balanced meals, food bought didn’t last, they cut the size of or skipped a meal, they were hungry but didn’t eat a meal

  • 36% of GRCC students scored in “low security” or “very low security” for housing

    • In the past 12 months, they met two of the following: didn’t pay full amount for utilities, didn’t pay full amount of rent/mortgage, moved two or more times, moved in with others, doubled up

  • 9% of GRCC students were homeless at least one night in the past year

So, what can you do?

  • Ask students how they’re doing! Get to know them so that they feel safe coming to you when they are dealing with an issue that impedes their ability to be successful.

  • Be aware of and connect them with resources through the GRCC Get Help page

    • Don’t be afraid to offer that additional help! Sit with them and look through the resources/support together

  • Help a student who expresses food, housing or funding insecurity by connecting them with resources through Early Alert.

  • Submit ideas for the CAP team and be ready to volunteer to support your ideas!

  • Make donations to student food and snack pantries across campus

  • Join the Learning Circle – “Paying the Price” book discussion hosted by CTE which starts January 23 from 3:30 – 4:40 p.m. in RJF Hall 240. Contact Chris Remley ( to sign up!

Thank you!
