GRCC receives second grant from Metallica for workforce training

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Community College received a $50,000 grant from Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation to continue it’s progress in teaching high demand welding skills to its students.

Tax-funded early childhood programs to begin, expand March 2020

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — New and expanded programs to promote the healthy development of children up to age 5 and connect their parents with resources will begin in March.

… PLAY AND LEARN COMMUNITIES: Facilitated play groups guide parents and/or caregivers with young children through group and individual play activities that model learning opportunities and build understanding of child development. Play and Learn Communities service providers were awarded a total of $705,406 for 2020.

… Grand Rapids Community College – Continue to provide and expand Early Learning Communities (ELC) play and learn groups. Early Learning Communities is a collaborative, community-based partnership that strengthens the skills of early childhood caregivers and educators. More information can be found here:

Meet Dayanny de la Cruz, the Dominican Chef in Charge of Super Bowl Menus

On game day this Sunday, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira won’t be the only Latinas shining. The Super Bowl chef this year is Dayanny Cruz, and she is Dominican. Cruz — a mother of three and ovarian cancer survivor — will be part of the Centerplate team at Hard Rock Stadium and will oversee the menu for the popular sports event in Miami.

Her grandmother made her fall in love with cooking and taught her the ropes in the kitchen when she was growing up. Cruz began her career in hotel management after earning a hospitality degree from the Dominican Republic’s Universidad Central del Este. She quickly realized she wanted to become a chef and got a master’s degree in culinary arts from Grand Rapids Community College.

Ric Underhile was appointed Noorthoek Academy’s interim executive director. He fills the position previously held by Mary Ruth Scholz. Underhile has served as a member of the Noorthoek board since 2018 and as director of grants management and associate vice president for advancement at Aquinas College for the past five years. His administrative background in education also includes five years as associate dean, interdisciplinary studies with Grand Rapids Community College.

RecycleMania officially begins today! For the next eight weeks, GRCC will be competing with 300 colleges and universities across the nation to see who can recycle the most! Help GRCC become a leader in sustainability by recycling properly and encouraging others to do the same. Stay tuned for weekly updates on our recycling efforts and GRCC’s standing amongst other Michigan schools.

Finance and Administration holds chili competition

The Finance & Administration division served up some “super bowls” for the Super Bowl with their 2nd annual Chili Cook-off competition this past Friday. There were 15 different variations of chili (all delicious), trivia games, and good fun. Congratulations to our top chefs:
