Local schools show love, support for students during shutdown

Local schools, from elementaries to colleges, are doing what they can to show support and love for the students and families that they’ve been separated from, at least physically, during the extended school closures and switches to online learning amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

… Grand Rapids Community College staff and community members also created a video for students, with the message of “We love you, we miss you and we are here for you.”

Cole Hansen has found a lot of mentors in Grand Rapids’ music scene – artists who’ve encouraged her to pursue songwriting and create her own music.

Child care centers stand in the gap

In response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s March 18 executive order for child care centers to stay open for disaster relief if they are “willing and able,” some local providers are continuing to serve the children of the essential workforce despite financial hardships.

… Grand Rapids Community College’s Laboratory Preschool also is closed, and the United Methodist Community House preschool was closed the week of March 23 and planning to evaluate the situation weekly thereafter.
