Promoting equity in CTE

Community college career and technical education (CTE) programs are increasingly committed to achieving equity goals and are finding creative ways to do so, according to a new MDRC report.

… Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) in Michigan used grant funds to hire a recruiter who is bilingual and does outreach in communities with high unemployment. “You have to be feet on the ground in the community. You have to be there and know people,” a staff member told MRDC researchers.

Stepping up to donate in a time of need

Beth O’Donnell normally spends her days working with 200 high school juniors who are interested in the healthcare field – future nurses, doctors and other professionals likely to work someday in area medical offices and hospitals.

… Grand Rapids Community College has stepped up in several ways. Donations include more than 70,000 pieces of medical and personal protection equipment. Faculty members are volunteering time and expertise to Spectrum Health and other local healthcare facilities and public safety departments, according to a news release.

Bizness at (Home) Work: Embracing technology and learning in the new norm

We’ve all been forced into this new way of working — meetings, events, and even celebrations held virtually. While this has been a challenge for many, I believe it also has been an eye opener for how we can work smarter. How we can take some of what we’ve been forced to adapt to and transform the way we work forever. I envision many people, businesses, and organizations returning to work, sitting down as a group, and thinking about the lessons learned and what we can do differently (and smarter).
